Questions to ask the center about the new system

We have a thread for discussion of how this new  software will impact us as a group.

This thread is only for " brief" questions to be  forwarded to the center for answers

My questions are:

Will we be able to post screen shots on the new forum?

Will the center send an email to all registered users with a  link to the new  forums ?

Will all LG Osprey comments   be lumped  into one place like they are on the main blog?

Please add your  questions  here . Comments and discussion on the   other thread Tiger started of How will this change impact us as a group

Thanks

  • The announcement of the software changes are here.

  • Does this mean that we will have to be 'Friends' with a member in order to drop a quick note on to Their Page?

  • Seems like it, LINDYBIRD. I wonder why they had to chose the three days nearest to hatching at LG. Knowing me and my age it will be some time before I become au fait with it.

The mind is like a parachute, it doesn't work if it's not open.

  • Please note a new information bar, about the changes,  has appeared at the top of the screen

  • In future, will the comments we make on each others Page be private, and only able to be read by both parties, but no one else?

    Q. Woman -  the older I get, the longer it takes to learn new tricks!  Hoping it will all be  'user friendly'.....

  • Just to note that if anyone has problems accessing the camera on the RSPB webpage during the maintenance period, you can view it in any media player software by opening the following URL:

    mms://wms.carnyxlive.co.uk/abernethy

I'll post further instructions for as many players as I can if anyone needs them.

The LG webcam, along with several others including the Goshawk from the New Forest can also be viewed on the Carnyx website:

Note that some video feeds, including the Loch Garten one, require Microsoft Silverlight to be installed. You can get it if you don't have it already:

    http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/Default.aspx

For anyone running Linux, there is an open source version I believe, although I've not tried it.

I prefer to use standalone players to the web browser for viewing the webcams as I can then resize and arrange them on the desktop better. Such software usually provides a simple screenshot function, and often a video recording facility too. I use VLC player for recording clips from the LG cam.

There is an option to open standalone players, using both Silverlight and Windows Media Player, in some feeds from Carnyx, including the Goshawk.

  • Thanks to Barbara Jean for starting this thread and to all who have posted so far.  At least when I come back from Florence I will have somewhere to look because I just know it will take a while for it to sink in.  Absolutely dreading it as I will be worried about finding anything.  Will stop thinking about it for now and see how things go when I come back a week Sunday.

  • One thought, we have two threads on this subject for the LG Group alone.  Lots of useful information is being provided by very informative bloggers.  BUT, I assume these threads won't be accessible once the changeover has occurred, and therefore this wonderful source of info to help dumbos like me won't be around.

Another thought.  Graham Bird's piece suggests that the messages currently on your own Personal Page will be deleted, so if you have had messages from friends that you want to keep for whatever reason, you should copy and paste them to somewhere safe.

  • Sheila   I have been assured that these threads will not disappear.  Not sure exactly where they are going to end up though.

The point about the personal messages is that it is a good idea to save them if you think them important. Although only four show as you copy and delete them then older ones appear.
