Weekly Chat, Sunday 8 May 2011

Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers. I hope you all have a great day.

Do check back to last week's chat for OG's gorgeous wildflower garden pics And Lynette's pics of Dunedin & Hampton eaglets.

Linda - I love your pics of Tatton Park, especially autumn.

Alan  -24 handbags!!!! Must be related to our Dau#2 who collects shoes & handbags. Me, I have one all-purpose go-everywhere shoulder bag. Plus the gold one OH gave me decades ago and saw the light of day at the weddings.

Brenda, Linda, Lynette, Joan, OG - On my first trip o/s I had a list of what to take. It helps remind me not to forget vital things like eye drops, film (nowadays it is memory cards & battery charger!). When I returned I noted what I didn’t use and now I check the amended list, pruning every trip. Why drag excess around? Invariably my room in B&Bs was on 2nd or3 rd floor. Besides I may buy things, such as jumpers - that’s my weakness. Stupid really because I knit them and the wardrobe is bursting. So, OG, I shall choose one of them. And camera almost lives in said all-purpose bag!

Joan - I heard a story of a local teacher who had 7 children in her class named "Amy" but all spelled differently.

  • SheilaFE: Looking forward to RD heard him once before...so much knowledge.

Yes I do have back problem but with excercise I can keep the trapped nerve problem at bay. Had 9 tons last summer but we still have quite a bit left. That is drying well and as you probably know the harder the dryer the wood the better it burns. I do have it down to a fine art and it is quite satisfying when finished.

Fickle cat back under bamboo waiting for family next door to return...but that is how it should be.

  • Osprey chicks were banded at Dunedin today. See here

  • Trish 2  You may have missed my story about this box which I relayed some days ago.  We go to Switzerland regularly in March (Cross Country Ski Marathon that my OH takes part in).  A number of restaurants have a box nest to windows.  This box has round holes on the other side of the window much like a bird box would have, and perspex along the window side.  The box contains bird food (one way of keeping food from being covered with snow), and you can watch the birds eating while you have your food inside the restaurant.  OH made such a box , supported on two lose towers of bricks so that you can see inside the box from the kitchen window.  However....  The box has a removable lid.  The birds were not tempted to go thru the two holes at all.  The wind blew the lid of a few weeks again, and I kept putting a handful of sunflower hearts in the two boxes and now a variety of birds just pop into the box to take the seed.  It is fascinating to watch.  But I have to say I was more than a little surprised when the partridge tried it!

OK, another naive question to you experts.  On 'my page' I could add photos and add favourites.  I'm not too bothered about adding photos, but wondered whether I should add the daily and weekly pages to favourites in case I have difficulty in finding my way in next week.  However, it is not immediately obvious to me how I could do this.  Any ideas?  Or is this not the purpose of Favourites?

Sheila: I'm not an expert, and I've been wrong before in my life! LOL! But here's my understanding:

During the upgrade, everything will be moved around on the website. The entire structure of the website will change. So any Favourites that you save now probably won't work or be very useful after the upgrade.

In other words: The new Weekly Chat and Daily Update will be in a different place. So the old URLs -- the links -- that you've saved in Favourites won't be very useful after the upgrade.

Except the one to the nest webcam; I don't think it's changing.

Here's the quote from the software upgrade announcement: "As a result of the new topic-based organisation, most URLs across the Community site will change."

I'm just trying to be helpful to you, not critical, dearie!

  • dinnlib...Sorry for the late reply, just caught up now after work...I lived in Fife for a few years and the Black Isle was somewhere we never got round to visiting, everyone says what a lovely scenic place it is..Very Jealous!...I treated myself to a decent camera a couple of months ago now, so I must start to include some of my attempts at photography to the group....Tina

  • Bettyboo: Make sure you get there to see the dolphins but if like me it is nearer to go to Fort George to see them it saves me about 50 miles!!

  • Annette in SoCal....it is lovely here, I'm originaly from Staffordshire, but feel this is where I want to be, plus the climate is great. We have the river a mile down the road from where we live, where we spend alot of time either in the canoes or dinghy, its something you never tire of.Tina

Trying it now - see Tiger

I didn't get asked if I wanted it to open in new window - sorry!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Wendyb...Thank you for that, We are actually planning our next camping trip and I have to say Scotland is very appealing, my partner has only been to Glasgow and Edinburgh, told him  he hasn't lived :-) plus  Fort George would be right up his street, anything military...I remember last year watching the Dolphins when I visited a friend in Gibraltar, wonderful day.

OG   Well done that is success. To get a new window you just move the menu down.
