Weekly Chat, Sunday 8 May 2011

Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers. I hope you all have a great day.

Do check back to last week's chat for OG's gorgeous wildflower garden pics And Lynette's pics of Dunedin & Hampton eaglets.

Linda - I love your pics of Tatton Park, especially autumn.

Alan  -24 handbags!!!! Must be related to our Dau#2 who collects shoes & handbags. Me, I have one all-purpose go-everywhere shoulder bag. Plus the gold one OH gave me decades ago and saw the light of day at the weddings.

Brenda, Linda, Lynette, Joan, OG - On my first trip o/s I had a list of what to take. It helps remind me not to forget vital things like eye drops, film (nowadays it is memory cards & battery charger!). When I returned I noted what I didn’t use and now I check the amended list, pruning every trip. Why drag excess around? Invariably my room in B&Bs was on 2nd or3 rd floor. Besides I may buy things, such as jumpers - that’s my weakness. Stupid really because I knit them and the wardrobe is bursting. So, OG, I shall choose one of them. And camera almost lives in said all-purpose bag!

Joan - I heard a story of a local teacher who had 7 children in her class named "Amy" but all spelled differently.

  • Jay-Me    Nice to see you posting. I wonder how many readers we have who do not post at all. As I pointed out the other morning there were something like 532 lurkers.

It seems that you are a great Welsh osprey fan. I do like Wales partcularly Dyfi.

It would be great if lots of you lurkers de-lurked to say hello before the great software change.

Annette I have always thought that   you have made an enormous contribution to this group with you metronomic thread management. Indeed the overseas contribution to this forum has been huge, be it Australia, Canada, Finland, USA or elsewhere.

There has also been an enormous silent contribution from the various dogs, cats and not least birds. Perhaps we should have a thread with pictures of those that featured heavily. No doubt  Billie, Bobbie, Casper, Dillon, Hamish, Jasper, Toffee etc and names I have missed.

Of course the real superstars are  EJ, Odin, Rothes, Mallachie and Garten plus chick s1, 2, and 3 from 2010 and the egg 1,2 and 3 of 2011.

  • Morning folks Have finally caught up on reading the many comments posted since Sunday.  I view the prospective changes with horror - it's a miracle that I actually found this thread and I'm sure I'll be lost after the changes!  Thanks for the encouragement to go to Nethy without OH - I'd happily do so but I'm a wimp and can't make an issue of respite care when he says he'd rather not go in somewhere.  My sister thinks I should just say he has to go for respite care and let me get away but it's not easy to insist - don't know if she could do it if it was her OH.

I read the link about the sporting estates wanting the right to kill birds of prey, with some horror.  There are enough killings as it is, without legalising it, just so that some people can slaughter grouse.

  • Hi patricia -  I understand when you say its not easy to insist on such a thing. Its just that we are all concerned for you, and feel that a holiday would actually help the both of you to cope with the situation, in the long term.

The sporting arguments with the killing of birds is complicated by the fact that a lot of jobs are dependent upon the grouse season etc. , and that some of these estates are managed in part for just such events. Not that I condone it all, I hasten to add, but understand that the countryside way of life is threatened in so many ways, it is all interlinked. Wish there was a way for the countryside to be managed just so that people like ourselves could enjoy it, without the need for such sports.

  • Patriciat - I am truly sorry at your dilemma and admit I know little about these matters . Is it possible that some organisation might have a person willing to come in to your home whilst you are away? It is so hard to leave a loved one in a home  when they don't want to go.  I've missed the beginnning of your posts and so don't   know whether we are talking of a hospice or just a residential home. Forgive me. Like the others, I believe that a true break away for a short while would be good for you both. I take it Nethy Bridge is not all that far from you ?

  • patricia I agree with Lindybird and Cirrus that it is difficult to say you will go to LG any way and on your own.  I would certainly find it so.  But as this is also to give you a spot of 'me' time and respite, would it be possible for a close family friend, or even your doctor, to have a word with your OH, to try to make him see that it is for your good as much as his?  I do feel for you.

Edit Cirrus, patricia lives in N Ireland, so the journey would not be an easy one.

  • Morning all,

Looks like lots of people are going away this weekend. I hope that everyone that is going away have a great time. Not sure if we will be at Glaslyn on sunday as it depends on the weather. Certainly plan to visit there at least once during the week. We had a lovely picnic there by the river last year.

Linda : I totally agree with you about shooting estates. It's a pity they cant be put to better use and still attract tourists and provide jobs. I cant get my head  round the idea that people  pay money to shoot birds that cant fly all that well and that these birds are bred and protected only to be shot.

Annette : Excellent news re the whale count and the 100th calf.

Thanks to everyone else for the chat  and pics etc.

    Here is todays goldfich pic:

  • Another lovely Goldfinch pc from Alan - Hope you enjoy your break in Wales Alan - I remember your going there last year, and it seems amazing that time has just gone so quickly, and you are off there again.

  • Thanks Linda.

Update from Stefan Hose at Zurich:
" The female of the peregrine falcon pair at Hochkamin Josefstrasse collapsed and died within short time today (9 mai) while plucking a prey. Our game keeper This Schenkel got the 3 chicks and the dead female falcon body out in the morning. The female will be examinend at animal clinic. The three chicks will be raised at raptors station Berg am Irchel."

  • Good afternoon everyone weather here is very changeable and when it rains it is very heavy for about five minutes and then the sun comes out again. I am feeling quite a bit better this week and maybe last week I was just feeling a bit sorry for my self.  Even tho' it is over six years since my wife died there are times when things just seem to overwhelm you and I think I had one of those times last week.

Diesel and I have had our morning walk and I came home and made some chicken broth so now I can put it into single portions and freeze it. I hope after the update we will still be able to continue this chat page as it is a caring and comforting site as well as giving out information on a variety of topics.

Hope all those going on holiday have a great time and the weather is kind to you.
