Weekly Chat, Sunday March 27, 2011

Morning all; dinner time here - well getting close - off to check the options; back to catch up later.

  • Godd morning Brenda H and how sickening about thieves stealing the lead from the church roof.  Trouble is rain comes in and does damage inside too.  It happens quite a bit down here.  We had some rain in the night but nothing much but when OH was speaking to his Mum yesterday who lives in Orpington they had quite a bit of rain in the form of very heavy showers.

Will not be doing any dancing tonight, can't risk having a coughing fit.  Not been bad this morning but I am going to start it will be there.

  • Been busy in the garden this morning.  With 22 posts already (and counting) on the new weekly thread, I have to admit I shan’t be able to catch up with yesterday, so appropriate thanks, commiserations, congratulations and good wishes to all who posted there – with special hugs for Alicat.

Annette – we no longer watch the boat race in our house – I was always an Oxford supporter, and OH supported Cambridge (geographical reasons – I grew up in the Thames Valley, he was from East Anglia!).  We are sure the voluntary work will be good for Son – and he will still have time to write job applications too, but with renewed vigour because he won’t be stuck at home alone trying to do them all day.

AQ - sounds like you managed the teens very well – a bit of give and take, expect a bit of challenge but make sure they know who’s in charge!  Ooooh, another Grand-cat – she’s lovely.  And Jasper obviously enjoys his “high life”!!

Dibnlib – Good to see you around again.  I did notice your reply re your course when dashing through Saturday posts – very frustrating when work isn’t marked quickly.  We are expecting to see quite a difference in Son when we are up in April.

Alan and others – sorry about all the computer problems at present.  Perhaps I have done better not having an upgrade yet!!

Margo – enjoy your evening out – and I hope Billy likes his Whiskas!  Just a thought – might “he” turn out to be a “she”?!

Lindy – only once used kennels for our two (late) dogs, when they were still young – had to bath them when they came home!

Paul – we think all our clocks got done eventually – until we find which one we missed!  I don’t know why we have so many – does anyone else have one in the greenhouse, one in the garage and another on the outside wall?

Sheila – a great list of birds this morning!  We just have the “usual suspects” today – but were later getting up, and OH is working quite near the feeders.

Brenda – so sorry about your church roof – there are some terrible characters about, although I think this is one which has always been a risk as far back as I can remember.

Just a wee taster from Mersehead (actually the last one taken in the late afternoon) – they have feeders in front of a huge picture window which attracts all the Finches, Tits, Sparrows, Yellowhammers etc, so a bush full of small birds:

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • original goldfinch  nice pic of the birds.  We are not sure whether Billy is male or female as we can't get close enough to examine him.  In our mind he has little boy ways, but Billy suits either male or female.

  • Diane, we are going by ferry from Oban to Lochboisdale, then most of the islands in the chain have a causeway now but one or two are small ferries, then from Stornaway to Ullapool.  We are in the car and taking bikes and camping gear, but might stay in B&B if weather dictates. Wow, that dream sounds extremely powerful and emotional.

dibnlib, I didn’t say in my original post, but it is the Outer Hebrides we are going to, any info anyone? Well done on getting back on with your course.

The bullfinches haven’t been back, not when I’m watching anyway, but yesterday morning we had our greenfinch pair and also a redpoll.  The coaltit may have got a mate and not just a friend, as they have both disappeared.

Still having problems getting the right combination of ticks in notification boxes on my profile.  I am either getting emails re all the posts in the LG forum or nothing at all, even though I tick “email me replies to this post”.  I can’t cope with 200 emails a day now the season has started so I have to turn it off and go back to looking at the individual threads – this means I will probably catch up a couple of times a week and will miss loads of interesting stuff!  :-((   I’m sure I used to be able to get emails about just a couple of threads....  Hope I don’t miss too much of your interesting doings, folks.  (Birthday wishes could be a little late, so here’s yours now OG, Happy Birthday for Thursday!!)

Re clocks, I always spend Sunday on the old time, then change it for evening TV/radio listening and go to bed on the new time.  Yesterday we went to Gateshead for a concert at the Sage (Jazz Festival) and got home about 1am, so we needed not to lose the hour’s sleep today LOL.

  • I've just been trimming the fat off a piece of beef brisket ready for the slow cooker.  Looking at these tasty lumps of fat it made me wonder if they'd be suitable for Mrs SH when she returns.  Havent seen her for a while so for now I've bagged them up and put them in the freezer!  Do any of you raptor experts know?

  • Well, haven't seen EJ at all today, so no more excuses not to go off and make the most of the sunshine.

  • ALICAT I know how hard it must be for you but a good idea to go out for a while.  Just remember you took a decision that was right for Casper as you would not have wanted him to suffer any longer.  As I said before he was so loved by you both and did all you could for him.  He is in a better place now, no pain and no suffering.  Thinking of you both.

  • OG: When I mentioned your photo competition (yesterday), I forgot to ask you how soon you will know whether you've won. Does the judge take a long time to decide? Can you make multiple entries?

I'm just delighted about your son's progress. It sounds like he's doing much better. The volunteer job will be so good for him. It'll put him in regular contact with people and provide a good solid schedule. You must be so relieved. When do you leave to visit him this month?
