NEWS FROM OTHER NESTS - 2011

Some interesting news from the Lake District. Apparently there was a second nest last year:

  • Keith: blue AW is the new ID for maroon AA (think he lost his original ring some time ago - he was given a new colour ring when they satellite tagged him recently).

As far as I remember, 3 of the 4 chicks at site O survived to ringing - they hoped - but couldn't be certain - that one was the fostered chick. So one of blue AU/ AY/ AZ may well be 08(97)'s biological offspring, but there is no way to be certain which, unless they have taken DNA samples.

Rachel: All chicks at RW have DNA samples taken.

  • Keith,

I didn't draw up the ring IDs spreadsheet all at once - I started it off about 18 months ago and just add new info as I come across it!

  • Sue C That spreadsheet is an  amazing piece of work , congratulations. may i add it to my favourites

  • Thanks, Sandy - I knew they took samples from the original translocated birds, just wasn't sure if they had continued to do so. I'm sure they'll pass on the results when they come through.

EDIT - looking back - belatedly - at my own spreadsheet, I see that I have already noted that DNA confirmation was promised when the chicks were ringed...

Theoretically, I suppose, it would be possible to find out whether Monty at Dyfi is in fact the unringed chick from the 2004 Welshpool nest, as has been suggested. That would make him son of 07(97), whose DNA is known, and also related to Henry if I'm right in thinking that red 7J was from the same nest with at least one common parent. But I'm fairly sure that wouldn't be regarded as sufficient scientific reason to attempt to catch him!

  • Sunshine, sure you can favourite the spreadsheet.

As it's got so large, it's probably a good idea for Chloe & Tiger to have a separate copy of the last published version - protection against computer crashes!

  • Rachel   It was Red 6J  that was the female in the Welspool nest.  Red 7J is better known as Nimrod. All we know about Red 6J is that she was from the Black Isle like Henry. The specualtion (and it is speculation) that she might have been related to Henry is that Monty has an orange eye just like Henry.

I had not realised that DNA samples were taken from the originally tranlocated to Rutland.

Do not worry I copies of all your spreadsheets. Now there is a copy in cyberspace too so I think it is well backed up.

On the issue of backup. I normally back to an extermal hard drive which goes with me when I go away from home as well as a 16GB memory stick which always lives in my pocket. In addittion I have a hard drive which lives with a neighbour.

Sorry - slip of finger! I'm trying to do too many things at once: should know by now that I can't multi-task :o) Interesting coincidence that the Welshpool female and Nimrod have consecutive ring numbers - Nimrod isn't from the Black Isle, though both hatched in 2001.

Info re routine DNA testing of translocated birds is on the original Rutland website somewhere - I remember it being mentioned in relation to chicks initially thought male which turned out to be female (or vice versa).
