Did my first night protection duty at Bassenthwaite last night, 7pm to 7am. There were two of us so we swapped in and out, going to lay head down in between times (it was pretty cold). Both birds were around the nest and we saw the male eating a large fish which I believe to be a perch (it had red fins). He was disturbed by a jackdaw sitting and watching him eat and flew to a different branch. We thought he could have dropped the fish but he was soon eating again, in fact he was eating for so long (an hour) there couldn't have been much left. He took it to the nest but we didn't see anyone fly away with the remains. Thankfully they were both still there in the morning - job done! I haven't seen this female fly off the nest like EJ does even when Odin isn't actually on the nest, but I suppose she must go sometimes, just not when I've been there.

It must be quite an experience that you had overnight at Bassenthwaite Terry, Ithanks for telling us about it. I bet you were cold though. There is still a strong wind. I hope to go over there soon, and will look for the benches, it is disappointing if they are not there.
