Daily Update, Monday August 10, 2009

5:30 a.m. UK Time. Been out at a BBQ. Came home to one bird on nest - think it's Garten, but not sure at all. Whoever it is has a huge fish in its talon and is flapping (not mantling) and calling. And has flown off! Unfortunately, didn't see if it took the fish.
  • Mallachie returns to the nest and seems interested in something down below the back of the nest. Has she dropped another fish??

  • I think that was Rothes - too much ginger on the nape.  Correct me if not - anyone.

  • ...

Everything in life is speaking in spite of its apparent silence.

I'm almost certain it was Mallachie. Another shot showing her alice band...

Both Mallachie and Garten have developed a lot of orange in the last week or so making it difficult to ID them. Rothes also has a bit more white on her head but.....well, I think it's Mallachie but stand corrected if it isn't.

  • Garten* is on the nest and we had some cracking close ups.

I wouldn't fancy being on the receiving end of that beak!

She's slightly out of view at the moment.

    * I'm now totally confused. Right leg ring, brown necklace.....EJ?? But....pale tps to the wings? Argghhh...

  • OK, confusion reigns.....

Back view of osprey in previous post. Thinking EJ now.....

as this is the rear view of a tagged chick (think Rothes) on the nest at the moment...

    Over to you.....................!!

  • Back home now. Thanks everyone for the updates and love the close up shots of Garten from Gary and Paula. From what you say, it looks as if EJ is still around. I did say at lunchtime that it was getting late in the day and she may go early tomorrow, but only EJ knows.

  • Agree, BrendaH, lovely close ups and great pics today, thanks everyone.  Had to go out a couple of times today and as soon as poss., I'm logging back in to see if EJ is still with us.

  • With all our human emotions charging around it is so difficult to remember this beautiful family are wildlife and even more difficult to accept that they will cope without our daily checkins!  I just wish we could track EJ, Odin and Garten too as I will worry about them until we get reports they are safely back in Scotland. I can;t look at the photos any more as I keep blubbing at the thought of not seeing these beauties until next year. My family, too, think I am mad "they are birds Mum, just birds".  Doesn;t feel like that to me, it feels like they are my own offspring!!  LOL

  • Snowbird I hope everything went well for your husband today.  Meant to say this earlier sorry, but have been so wrapped up in holiday ironing and catching every glimpse I can of our family.
