After Tiger started the thread for tracking Rothes and Mallachie I thought that we could do with a thread for the tracking of ospreys fitted with transmitters by Roy Dennis. As the "summer" marches on it won't be long before the only way we can get our osprey fix is to follow their migrations.
This year we have the opportunity of following all three tagged birds from last year: Nimrod, Beatrice and Morven. It will be fascinating to find out if they will winter in exactly the same place as last year, and also whether they take the same route.
Added to that Roy has tagged two more adult males this year, Red/white 8T (an Abernethy bird) and Morven's other half (Logie's ex fella). I'm not certain whether Roy has any further transmitters or will attempt to catch any more adult males but, including Rothes and Mallachie, we will be able to follow at least 7 ospreys on their incredible journeys this autumn.
Fair blows the wind for France and Red 8T took advantage of it, flying an incredible 443 miles in 13 hours from Yorkshire to Brittany!
wow, thanks Sandy. What an incredible distance!
That's about 35 mph - faster than most cars on the LA Freeways!
Rothiemurchus also had a good day yesterday, flying at least 194 miles to reach Stourbridge by 4pm.
Suh good news Sandy I was getting a bit worried about the bad weather but hopefully he will move on move on to France now.

I seem to remember that Nimrod did some similar flights last year. Scary if its a juvenile, but these are experienced birds.
Rothiemurchus doing well too after a bad day the other day. Lets hope he doesn't get too ambitious! His journey so far:

Sorry, Sandy. Didn't realise you had just posted ahead of me!
Thanks FlyingC
what a feat. I hope he has crossed the bay by now.
What progress Red 8T has made Gary. Hopefully he wll soon be across the Bay of Biscay and be able to stock up with fish before flying on. Such a worry these ospreys but they know what they are doing as it is their natural instinct that keeps them going.
I agree Margobird. It is a worry but I have to hope those that have done it before, like Red 8T, know what they are in for and how to deal with it.
Roy's website is so easy to get around and the maps are great.
