After Tiger started the thread for tracking Rothes and Mallachie I thought that we could do with a thread for the tracking of ospreys fitted with transmitters by Roy Dennis. As the "summer" marches on it won't be long before the only way we can get our osprey fix is to follow their migrations.
This year we have the opportunity of following all three tagged birds from last year: Nimrod, Beatrice and Morven. It will be fascinating to find out if they will winter in exactly the same place as last year, and also whether they take the same route.
Added to that Roy has tagged two more adult males this year, Red/white 8T (an Abernethy bird) and Morven's other half (Logie's ex fella). I'm not certain whether Roy has any further transmitters or will attempt to catch any more adult males but, including Rothes and Mallachie, we will be able to follow at least 7 ospreys on their incredible journeys this autumn.

It seems Rothes is not the only young osprey feeling restless at the moment - Roy Dennis reports Rothiemurchus was moving S through Senegal on Fri 15th, stopping overnight near the town of Tivaoune, ENE of Dakar. Perhaps he's heading for the Saloum Delta - though assuming Roy's birds are also on a weekly update cycle, we'll have to wait a while to find out.

Oh I never knew until now that Rothiemurchus is a chick of the pair featured in Springwatch in 2008. Also love the Loch an Eilean connection which featured so heavily in "Scottish Ospreys" by Philip Brown. It was that book that got me interested in ospreys back about 1982.

We'll probably never know what has prompted this foray South, but it reminds me of Nethy's decision to do something similar last year. Let's hope that Rothy quickly finds a suitable spot, and that he can avoid whatever fate befell Nethy.
BTW did you e-mail Roy re: Beatrice's move and the local flooding?
Thanks for the update Sue. That was a bit unexpected but they are unpredictable birds and that is what makes them so interesting.

Sandy, I did, but haven't heard from him so far. Will be interested to see what Beatrice's next update shows.
Latest information re Estonian osprey Erika:
Osprey Erika, travelling with her backpack since 2007, chose a new wintering place this year and is now in Sudan, near the Ad Damazin dam, in the middle reaches of the Blue Nile river, not far from the Ethiopian border.
Latest plot for Jukka the Finnish osprey:
Update from Roy Dennis on Rothiemurchus only. After a surprise visit to Dakar, he has pushed on south and is now near the Casamance river in southern Senegal, only 40 km from Red 8T (and a similar distance from Varela). Next report in 4 days.
Thanks Sue. That's a bit of a surprise as I assumed that Roy got a weekly data set like LG. Will be really interesting to see where he ends up.
