Tracking Other UK Ospreys

After Tiger started the thread for tracking Rothes and Mallachie I thought that we could do with a thread for the tracking of ospreys fitted with transmitters by Roy Dennis. As the "summer" marches on it won't be long before the only way we can get our osprey fix is to follow their migrations.

This year we have the opportunity of following all three tagged birds from last year: Nimrod, Beatrice and Morven. It will be fascinating to find out if they will winter in exactly the same place as last year, and also whether they take the same route.

Added to that Roy has tagged two more adult males this year, Red/white 8T (an Abernethy bird) and Morven's other half (Logie's ex fella). I'm not certain whether Roy has any further transmitters or will attempt to catch any more adult males but, including Rothes and Mallachie, we will be able to follow at least 7 ospreys on their incredible journeys this autumn.

Alan sightings coming in regularly as we creep ever nearer to the return of our ospreys.  Getting quire excited now but goodness knows how I am going to keep up with everything, so many thinks to watch at the moment.

Unfortunately, all those ospreys that are currently in France, and other parts of Europe, are going to suffer the effects of the latest blast of cold weather in the coming days. It'll be interesting to see if they manage to sit it out where they are or if they head South for a while.

  • Roy Dennis has posted an update - ospreys moving around are:

Rothiemurchus - has been exploring Sine Saloum, and may have visited "L'ile aux Oiseaux", where Simon King filmed the ospreys for Autumnwatch.

Beatrice - roaming around a wider area, and has changed her roost - perhaps the conditions on the Guadiaro are still not good for fishing?

  • Thanks Sue C you beat me to it.

  • Thanks Sue. With so many birds being tracked it will be interesting to see who moves first... and when!

  • Have just checked Roy's Blog and up came the following news!

"Hello, Do you know this osprey? was the exciting start of an email I've just received from Jean-Claude Lehoucq, a Belgian veterinary and also a wildlife photographer, who had been in northern Senegal in January. Attached to the email was a photo showing a satellite tracked young osprey and it was Rothiemurchus! "

More information for all to check out on Roy's page  (didn't want to give it ALL away) as well as a good photo of Rothie.   I find it thrilling the way so much of the world is involved in the ospreys.
