Tracking Other UK Ospreys

After Tiger started the thread for tracking Rothes and Mallachie I thought that we could do with a thread for the tracking of ospreys fitted with transmitters by Roy Dennis. As the "summer" marches on it won't be long before the only way we can get our osprey fix is to follow their migrations.

This year we have the opportunity of following all three tagged birds from last year: Nimrod, Beatrice and Morven. It will be fascinating to find out if they will winter in exactly the same place as last year, and also whether they take the same route.

Added to that Roy has tagged two more adult males this year, Red/white 8T (an Abernethy bird) and Morven's other half (Logie's ex fella). I'm not certain whether Roy has any further transmitters or will attempt to catch any more adult males but, including Rothes and Mallachie, we will be able to follow at least 7 ospreys on their incredible journeys this autumn.

  • Rothiemurchus is a worry and reminds us of Deshar last year. The winds are from the NE and that is not a good direction for finding land.

  • Wow!! Just got in and checked the news for first time since I posted this morning. What a star Red 8T is, that's how to migrate! These adult males seem so direct and positive once they've decided to go for it. Can't wait for the next update - I wouldn't even rule out him keeping going straight to Africa (a la Nimrod last year).

  • I agree Sandy, wonderful to watch. So pleased Red 8T has now crossed over land and still going!!

Like Alan, I am worried about "Rothy" as that is not a great track to be on.

  • Not quite so keen to see the update for Rothiemurchus. As Alan says there is more than a hint of Deshar's route of last year. The winds in the Channel are turning more easterly all the time and he needs to go southwards quickly.

On the up side, and we should never forget this, Deshar showed just how far a juvenile osprey can fly in one go. If he had altered course to the south and east half way through he could have made the African coast, thereby effectively completing the majority of the migration route in one go.

  • Really upsetting to read this so hope he has gone southwards.  We really do not want another Deshar episode.

  • Thanks Alan.  Bassin d'Arcachon must be a good area for ospreys to fish.  Wonder if any of them were ringed - only in the hope that one of them might have been Garten!

Bad news about Rothiemurchus.  Fingers crossed he finds land asap.  What a worry.

  • Something funny with my post.  Alan's post from the Faune-aquitaine site is showing at the bottom of the page in blue and seems to have sent my post into blue mode too but this time at the TOP of the page.  Apologies, but I can't do anything about it!

  • Sandy I I have just been reading Roy Dennis' blog and it seems he worried about Red 8T as well as Rothiemurchus.  It will be tragic if these 2 ospreys do not make it.  Praying hard and everything crossed that they will have changed course away from danger.  Yet again it shows us what a perilous journey this can be for young ospreys.

I've just posted this on the Diary page but perhaps here would have been better:

On Roy Dennis's site for Rothiemurchus, I think he has mis-named the Osprey as Red 8T at the beginning of his post.  I'm sure he means the young Rothiemurchus which is the one going off course (It is Rothy's page after all).

Red 8T is the older more experienced bird who has travelled non-stop from Northumberland to the tip of Spain (and might even carry on, according to Roy!).   I'm not too worried, just marvelling at his prowess.  You can check it on:  www.roydennis.org/Osprey/index.asp?id=173&sid=

Re my second post above - am still unable to delete but as everything seems to be back to normal, please ignore!
