Morning all: Here's to a good week for everyone. Check out latest pages of last week's thread to see great pix by OG of a kestrel on a road sign and a signpost for migrating birds and Gary's photos of the lovable Toffee plus his Toffee-proof technology. Just had dinner and managed to turn perfectly lovely piece of halibut into shoe leather!  Hate it when that happens, but was busy watching weather forecast.  Desk is looking cleaner - can actually see the surface now.  Take care all!

We've been watching Any Human Heart on telly; love William Boyd's books; thought the acting in this was really good.   Anyway, take care all and thanks all for pix and links.

Annette: Your tastes in telly are much more sophisticated than mine. I watched Primeval on BBC America last night. I love that show! LOL

Also watched the Meteorite Men marathon on Science Channel. (By the way, one of the Meteorite Men, Geoff Notkin, grew up in London and now lives in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona.) http://science.discovery.com/tv/meteorite-men/

  • Morning, All:  Really wet and grey here today, not nice.  Can see that lots has been written yesterday evening and last night, so will have to read it all shortly.....

Back later with replies, and the Monday Smile.

  • Right, here are the Monday Smiles for this week:  hope no-one is too delicate about sewerage, as these are pics of wagons which collect the waste from septic tanks!!!  Sounds grim, but I laughed a lot at the slogans:

....more next week, if you can stand it!

  • Lindy those are fantastic, really laughed.

Thanks to those who wished us a nice walk yesterday.  It was dull and damp but good anyway.  Mia absolutely loved it and got very dirty.  She's a lucky dog though.  We got her in Spring and it was fine if she needed hosing down in summer but when Winter came I was just too soft.  Along came a hot water outside tap next to the cold one and a shower mixer!!!  On milder days lately I've tried just using cold but she is not impressed and has to have her warm shower.  Now if you hadn't already gathered I'm mad when it comes to animals.......

Mrs SH has been again this morning.  She made one very serious attempt when a sparrow flew in - luckily it ducked in to our hawthorn hedge in time.  The feeders certainly aren't emptying like they used to though.

    OG - fantastic Dunnock pic.

Diane - what a fantastic looking bird the American Goldfinch is.

Right, walk time again before I have to get ready for work.  Maybe chat again this evening.

  • Good  morning Lindybird love the Monday Smiles especially " We haul milk at the weekends".

Hope you enjoyed visit from Eldest Son and Girlfriend and it did not make you feel worn out again.  Are you still coughing?  Have just spoken to my sister to find out how her son's wife is and she has just about lost her voice.  She has been looking after Rhys all weekend and is feeling a bit under the weather now.  Nephew's wife came out of hospital yesterday afternoon but will probably have to have further surgery.  Rhys is going back to Mum and Dad at lunchtime.  He has been ever so good for my sister as he always is, walking now and talking away in his own little language.  I look at a photo that was taken about an hour after he was born and can hardly believe how quickly he has grown.  I was supposed to be seeing him today but told my sister not to worry as I think she has enough on her hands at present.

Cold, wet and miserable here this morning and doens't look as though the sun will make many appearances this week.  Have to say the novelty of "me time" wore off a bit yesterday and I felt a bit lonely.  Did lots of jobs that I have been wanting to do to try and fill up the time.  Couldn't watch programmes on TV that we both usually watch on a Sunday evening as they were recorded so OH can see them.  He will get home about 10.30 tonight and I will be pleased to see him again.  He is back to work Tuesday so he will be feeling worn out by the time Tuesday evening comes.    He has a long day in London on Thursday as he is going up with his boss and they have several appointments, the last one being at 6.00 so he won't be home very early that evening.

  • Hello Diane glorious pic of the goldfinch.  Lovely colouring.

Annette hope you get your garage door fixed OK.

  • Good morning Trish 2 you made me laugh with Mia's shower.  Of course you are mad about animals, we all are on here.  When the weather was so cold I filled the bird baths up with warmish water so they didn't get a shock when they went in although to be honest I don't think they mind the cold water.  My sister has a Springer Spanies who is taken for walks in the New Forest and he always goes in the water and has been known to come home with icicles hanging from him.  He gets hosed down when he gets back but doesn't mind the fact that it is cold water.

  • Morning all.  Another grey day with little breeze.  Thanks for the confirmation Alan!  I did have another glass with dinner, thank you!

Margo I know you asked whether I saw an eagles on Mull during my stay last May/June, but I cannot remember whether  I responded and there is sooo much to check back.  I could put more info on your personal page if it would help.  And don't forget, if I can be of any help with your trip to LG let me know that too.

OG I hope your trip to see your daughter goes well today.  So glad your son will be coming to see you at the weekend.  I am sure it will be a relief to you to actually see and speak to him.  Sorry I mistook the sparrows!

Diane I was well impressed when you said you had a female goldfinch in the garden, and then you posted the wonderful photo of the American goldfinch and I could see it was not 'our' resident goldfinch.  Our natives goldfinches are very difficult to tell the sexes apart.  I think the slight difference is the amount of red around the bill, the male having the most, but I can never tell them apart!

Annette I recorded Any Human Heart which was shown in four parts, probably before Christmas, and I watched the final part over the weekend.  It was captivating.  I was so sorry when Logan Mountstuart toppled over and died, and the series came to an end.  I understand that Boyd wrote the screen play, so it would have followed his book faithfully.  I have never read the book, but if Boyds other novels are similar I shall certainly look out for them in future.  Diane I also enjoy watching Primeval!

Oh Lindybird how awful, LOL.  But it did remind me I really ought to get ours emptied!!

Bye for now.  Really must go and flit that ol' duster around before I can write my own novel without paper.

  • Trish2 Loved the story of Mia and her washing down!  Well, you can't blame her for preferring a warm shower:  wouldn't you?  I was interested in your comment about the feeders not emptying as quickly.  Over the past couple of days I have noticed a decline in number of birds around the feeders.  They are still there but not in the numbers of late.  Presumably they are busy seeking out territory and nesting places, and possibly insects and worms are becoming more abundant.

  • Hello Margobird.  So sorry to hear you are feeling lonely - it's a pity that these posts cannot be spoken and then we would all be with you.  Your sister and her son's family are having a rough time of it at present.  I am sure Rhys will be pleased to get home to his parents for a hug or three.  I don't have children, but photos taken of those of friends of mine show the huge change in such a short period.  I have known the young friend whom I accompanied to LG last year since she was a twinkle in her parents eyes and we have photos as she and her brother have grown up into their mid-twenties.  As you say hard to believe!  OH came across some photos of them when they were very young, whilst he was doing his scanning exercise and emailed them to the parents!  It sounds as though your OH will have a busy week.  Does he enjoy all the travelling?  Take care.
