Weekly Chat, Sunday February 20, 2011

Morning all: Here's to a good week for everyone. Check out latest pages of last week's thread to see great pix by OG of a kestrel on a road sign and a signpost for migrating birds and Gary's photos of the lovable Toffee plus his Toffee-proof technology. Just had dinner and managed to turn perfectly lovely piece of halibut into shoe leather!  Hate it when that happens, but was busy watching weather forecast.  Desk is looking cleaner - can actually see the surface now.  Take care all!

  • Thanks for the welcome back messages.

On dogs doing damage did anyone else see the pup who was taken to vet unwell and when opened up they found owners mobile. I locate mine by ringing it - can you imagine the shock if you did that and your pets tum rang. Also heard of pup who got into owners handbag and swallowed mascara and contraceptive pills. Gary be warned - tell Alison to keep bag tightly closed.

  • OH is doing a 3 hour shift with someone he doesn't work with often. When he first worked with Donnie he was warned that he really didn't like English - oh dear. Donnie didn't work out for a while that OH was from south of the border but he knows now and takes every opportunity to mention English b******s with a  grin on his face. OH finds this hilarious and I hope I haven't offended anyone by relating this story.

    Off to make snack supper.

  • Hi folks, another week starting which means its getting nearer to our ospreys returning.

    Read all your news

OG - what wonderful pics of sparrows and the bluetit

Alan glad you caught the osprey on the Dunedin and on the other cam.  Osprey still on Dunedin cam. Glad you managed to capture the peregrine in Nottingham.

  • Many thanks for starting the new thread Annette. Sorry to hear about the halibut: such a lovely fish too, but it is easy to get distracted for a short period.  I hope the keys turn up soon, without the need for divine intervention!  Glad you are now feeling much refreshed and ready to face the week with renewed vigour! When is the next whale watch planned for?

Another grey and murky day here.  I did managed to get out in the garden for a couple of hours, but the soil is wet and sticky, I should probably not have bothered.  Somehow at this time of year I feel the urge to get outdoors, but there is still the fear that winter will return again.

SueC I hope you enjoyed your walk in Pooh country, despite the rain.  Did you have any opportunity to play 'Pooh Sticks?!

Gosh AQ,  I had no idea your Lizarda was so long!  I guess they are insect eaters and not bothered about you!  I like the hints to Annette about her lost key.  How many times have I moved to a different part of the house and forgotten what I went thee for!  The only way to work it out is to start back at the beginning and go through what I was doing at the time.

Lovely photos of the sparrows OG.  Are they tree sparrows?  We had a few hear during the winter 2009-10 which was the first and last time they have visited.  Fortunately I took a photo to prove I wasn't dreaming.

I too have been watching the series Madagascar.  I think David Attenborough's commentary always adds such gravitas to any commentary.  I am particularly enchanted by the lemurs, indigenous to Madagascar and endangered. Our local zoo at Linton has an international rare breeds breeding programme and holds the stud book for lemurs.  They are delightful creatures. Oh, I see there is a repeat on now.

Glad you had a good night out with our friends Margo.

Hope your walk with Mia and OH wasn't too damp Trish2.  But it's nice to get out and take in the fresh air!

Alan great catch of the Peregrine at NottinghamTrent University.  Lovely osp captures too.  Yes, well done Crawley.  I'm not an avid 'footie' fan, but matches like that are difficult to avoid!  They will live on that match for years to come no doubt.

Lindy I have to say I was a trifle uneasy when I saw the cat in the bottle on TV yesterday.  Quite how or why a puss would even consider doing that is beyond me.

Nice to know you are feeling much improved dibnlib.  Your 'bring and share' lunch sounds an excellent idea, and I am sure your tuna Waldorf is much enjoyed.  The idea sounds delicious.

OH's bread is ready to come out of the Aga and now I can get on with dinner.  Have a good evening all - I see that a new drama starts tonight - South Riding by Winifred Holtby.  The previews look good.  I remember reading this years ago.

  • Dibnib - we do a bring and share lunch at the end of the month. As OH doesn't attend church with me I have to go and do a dinner at home but do get to the occasional one.  Dau tries to go as well.  It makes for a friendly with fellowship atmosphere all round.

Was on duty at Junior Church this morning, so deserted the choir. Mind you dau stayed in and said the sermon lasted for 25 mins!!!! it was on giving as our minister had deemed this Sunday as giving Sunday. Like all churches we are facing financial difficulties

Alan - which is the Hilton Head cam, I may have it in favourites under another name?

Caught Lily having a wash and brush up a short time ago.

Hang on I've got an itch!!

  • This could happen only in Indiana. LOLOLOL   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BScrP-lW60E&feature=channel  (You can skip the advert that plays at the beginning of the clip.)

Back later to catch up with everyone.

  • Lynette lovely photos of Lily and the den.  I have just checked it out, and as usual just a bundle of gently breathing bodies, so thank you!!

Oh dear Diane!!  What a hoo-har.  Looks pretty chilly there too.

Just watched Madagascar and thought it was really good.

Thanks for the lapwing pic and the young swan OG.

Thanks to everyone else for the latest chat and pics.

  • Ah ha, Alan.  Was that a quick 'edit' or am I going barmy?  Too large a glass of wine perhaps??

  • Had tea and made sure we are ready for trip tomorrow – wrapped Dau#1’s birthday present and one for Gdau#2 the day after.  Son is definitely coming to see us end of this week, a very short visit due to Job Centre constraints, so we have only two full days between our trip and his (using his train refund).  Couldn’t get hold of him at all yesterday, so got very worried and couldn’t sleep last night, but he surfaced this morning, after he passed a really comfortable night!

Annette – pleased you have sunshine.  Sorry about your BiL’s cough.  So glad you are feeling rested after catching up on sleep, and are feeling more like yourself.  Stickys are generically called Sticky Notes here, but generally known by the name of one brand, Post-It Notes.  Enjoy your shift on Whale watch tomorrow – I hope the sun will still be shining!

Dibnlib – enjoy your meals out this week.

Sheila – those Sparrows were House Sparrows – and there were Dunnocks (aka Hedge Sparrows) in the hedge bottoms.  Sadly, rarely see Tree Sparrows these days.

Lynette – we missed church again today – both felt most lethargic after late night, poor sleep and early wake-up with cramp.  New Minister and his wife have moved into the manse – Ordination 2nd March.  We are all really pleased that there is to be a Baby in the manse in May!  Have you watched the last few days Bear videos of Hope playing with the new cubs?  She really is a marvel, she could be so jealous, but she really seems to “love” them and is so gentle with them.

Diane – great story from Fort Wayne!!

Alan – another awesome picture on the Osprey Advent Calendar!

Won’t switch on tomorrow before setting off, so will leave you with last Friday’s photo of one of our three Dunnocks sitting on the arm of a garden seat:

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
