Morning all: Here's to a good week for everyone. Check out latest pages of last week's thread to see great pix by OG of a kestrel on a road sign and a signpost for migrating birds and Gary's photos of the lovable Toffee plus his Toffee-proof technology. Just had dinner and managed to turn perfectly lovely piece of halibut into shoe leather!  Hate it when that happens, but was busy watching weather forecast.  Desk is looking cleaner - can actually see the surface now.  Take care all!

  • AQ: That earthquake is just terrible. So sorry for the folks affected.

Hi, all. I'm really tired, so I'm heading to bed early (for me). Will catch up with everyone in the morning. Have a good day!

  • Hi all! Still very cold here, nights between -25 and -30C and days between -15 and -25. It has been a long winter here - snow came in November and will stay for a while still, blaah. I do hope it will get warmer soon. I just love spring! It’s been very hectic at work (surprise, surprise…hah..) so feeling a bit knackered (again…) Thanks for all your posts, can’t reply them all but each entry is appreciated.

Dibnlib, re daylight hours: yes you were right ‘bout the situation here - days are extremely short during winter and extremely long in summer (which I love). But when there is a lot of snow (like this winter and the last) it is actually not so dark - one can make a nightly visit to the bathroom without turning the lights on (if curtains are up). I live south(ish) - appr. 100km north from Helsinki (our capital) and today sunrise was 7.45am and sunset will be 5.27 pm but in northern part of country days are more than hour shorter still.

OG, great photos ( as always) thank you for sharing. LOVE that acrobatic Blue Tit!

AQ, great Lizzarda pics! And so sorry for that earthquake thereabouts

Linda, great Monday smiles! And like Annette I liked the “Yesterdays Meals on Wheels” best

WendyB, sorry your OH has been poorly

Do take care all and have a nice day/week

  • Lily's Cubs are named - Faith (♀ - continuing the Hope theme) and Jason (♂ - after the techie guy who has kept the communications working).

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Morning, All.   Shocked to come on to the News this am and hear about the awful earthquake in NZ. You would expect there to be perhaps a few warning rumbles or something, before the main event struck. Thinking today of those trapped and those who have lost their friends and loved ones.  It will of course be dark there now and so makes it harder for the rescuers. Just terrible.

Nice to hear again from auntie - I'm not surprised that you are looking forward to Spring, with temps like that!

OG: Thanks for info about the bear cubs.  Glad to hear that you enjoyed yesterday, look forward to hearing a little about it later.

  • Morning all,

Terrible news this morning about the earthquake in NZ. It seems to have struck at the worst time possible. I am sure the death toll will be much higher after watching the news this morning.

Auntie : I cant imagine what those temps are like. It is bad enough here with +4c every day. Sorry you are tired after working so hard.

OG : Thanks for letting us know about the cubs names. Faith and Jason sound good to me.

Gary : Sorry your OH is still poorly.

WendyB : Sorry to hear your OH had to go to hospital. Hope it is not too serious.

Lynette : Thanks for all the pics of Lily and Hope and Phoebe. Glad you found the cam link ok.

Weather is dreich, dull, dismal, dreary and all the other 'd' words that I cant think of at the moment. Temp is 3.6c.

Got up an hour earlier than necessary because somehow the alarm clock had got changed by 1 hour when I was wrestling with changing the duvet cover yesterday.

  • I'm so enjoying those pics on the Osprey Calendar, Alan.  What were you doing, altering your alarm clock like that!   Not a good idea!!    ;-)   Weather is all the 'Ds' here, too.  I'm fed up with winter now, roll on Spring.

  • Linda : I can assure you it was entirely unintentional. I think duvet cover wrestling should be an olympic sport.

Peregrine on the Derby cam right now:

  • WENDY   must be hard when you really want to know how OH is feeling. Don't think I'll be gymming this week as appt today lunchtime and scale and polish Thurs. Otherwise if we get nice day tomorrow and Fri the idea is drive out and try and extend my dog walking skills. We had 50 min walk this am. OH back to work at weekend.

MARGO   Didn't realise you had not been further North than Edn. Boy are you in for a treat.

  • OH slightly concerned as he has a cousin and family in Christchurch, but of course it is the size of Machester. Terry used to be an RAF fighter pilot. Ejected once (2 weeks before wedding and his fiance was the sister in charge when he was wheeled into RAF hosp Ely for a check up). Also called Mayday once when OH was the controller on the receiving end but landed safely that time. Now much safer as a Civillian pilot in NZ. Anyway reckon he will be safe at the mo as he has had his fair share of mishaps!   Must be a terrible place to be at the mo.

  • Just came on, and caught the Derby Peregrine, thanks Alan.  (I went off to have a shower and to make some phone calls, before).  Agree it should be an Olympic sport, tho' I think I have it sussed now.  Just line up the furthest corners and grab them, then lift & shake it down over the duvet....   We only have to do our wrestling when we have visitors, as we still have old fashioned blankets on our bed, at OH's request. These are currently being added to, or thrown on the floor, as every night is different temps at present!  -  Hope Lady P is feeling better now, after not feeling too good a few days ago.

I'm off out on errands - walking again to be more active, instead of firing up the car engine (you never know, we might save on diesel, too!).
