Hi folks. I missed all the excitement on the nest yesterday, But Robert, a Loch Garten Facebook regular, posted two videos on YouTube. Here's his summation of the events and the links to the videos - amazing if you didn't get to see the action:FROM ROBERT: 17:05 - a rogue female osprey flew around whilst Garten was feeding. The intruder alighted on the webcam tree and stayed for a good while watching, and waiting whilst Garten mantled and cried a call of distress. The female on the webcam tree just sat and sat, occasionally preening, but mainly watching. Close up of the intruder revealed little. 17:43 - after constant 'observation' of Garten by the rogue female, she swooped from the camera onto the nest! Garten defends admirably!18:35 - rogue female is back! After a battle royal on the nest, with Garten defending admirably, she flies off with the fish... pursued by the rogue!!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9a8_3hqFG_c - amalgamation of all the above.20:14 - fish arrives (by EJ?), and what looks like a juvenile pounces on it and flies off with it? A third osprey arrives and pecks at EJ's talons. The worry for me is, I couldn't see an aerial on any of the ospreys...? So, was it Garten who landed first and took the fish away? If it WAS, then who is the third osprey? If it WASN'T Garten on the nest, then who was it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhI0HqVOtUs
Hey Margobird: You're correct I'm sure - don't want to argue with Mother Nature.
FYI, If anyone's been watching Pete's Pond, we've had elephants and deer-like creatures at the waterhole. It's quiet now, but maybe worth taking a look at while our ospreys are out of sight. They have a cam (or camera operator) that actually follows the animals... It's at http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/wildcamafrica/
Just been checking on Google Earth and see that Mallachie has flown further afield. That is good news.

I seem to remember hearing or reading somewhere that we should regard West Africa as Home for the Ospreys, and the northern parts with long summer daylength as the place they migrate too just to have plenty of fishing time to feed their offspring!
Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
Oh my - that's a long way to go for a meal!
Yes that is correct goldfinch what a shame we don't have long hot summers (that's a laugh isn't it haven't had one for years) then perhaps we could tempt them to stay. If that was the case I would never get anythng done I am guilty of spending a huge amount of time watching these magnificant birds.

Does Tesco have a branch ou there?!!!!
No Tesco (but we have Vons/Safeways. Also, I think - is it Sainsbury's - has just opened something called Fresh and Easy in some places around LA (but not here).
Have so missed the webcam today, everytime I pop in for a look, I'm disappointed again- a taste of how lost we shall be when the Girls fly south.
ANNETTE : Thanks for the link to the Wild Africa pond, how interesting. Elephants are always amusing somehow, they seem to be a little human in their behaviour.( Not seen any yet on the webcam though, must have missed them, too! but will look in again tomorrow)
Oh well Annette - almost dark here in the Highlands, second glass of ice cold white rioja finished, no webcam, better start reading my bedtime book----
Off for my bedtime cocoa now, and looking forward to perhaps having the webcam back tomorrow. Thanks to Annette and to Robert for their useful info and pictures, keeping us quiet when we are desperate for news of events. Notice that there are now an amazing 166 Members of the LG Osprey Group.
