At 1.30pm on Friday 3rd April 2009 a new male osprey arrived at Loch Garten and began to woo EJ who has had a difficult time at Loch Garten since she arrived on June 16th 2003 having been evicted from her own nest.
At the time we said that we would give the new male time to settle in before passing judgent. As the season darws to a close maybe it is the time to say what Odin has come to mean to you and how he compares to previous Loch Garten males like OVS, Henry and Ollie?

Thanks for the pics, CIRRUS. And yes, how we miss them, FISH :-)
IMAGICAT
I wonder where Odin is now? I dare say he could still be in Spain.
Does he winter in Spain - I have misssed something somehere or am i on the wrong track and assuming he is on his way through Spain.
I saw your post then thought great he is back.

We have no idea where he winters but probably Africa. I am just trying to estimate where he might be with possibly a week to go.
Mind you he well be in Scotland right now for all we know. Odin is a "An osprey of mystery"
It has always been thought that Odin is of Scandinavian origin. Perhaps that explains why his return is much later than EJs as ospreys such as Jukka leave on migration later than UK birds.

Thought to be Scandinavian by whom? I think that is just an urban legend which grew up because of the name he was giving which I understand sounded a bit like Ollie.
Personally I think he is more likely to come from a nest not too far from Loch Garten inkeeping with what we know about the behaviour of male ospreys.
We do know that some ospreys from Norway do decided to settle in the UK. Two good examples are S09 and Nora's maternal grandmother ( Her female parent is a Norwegian osprey which was ringed as a chick 40 kilometres south of Oslo on 27th June 1992) but in both cases there is hard evidence for this. I do not know of any hard evidence that Odin was hatched in Norway.
I think Odin looks a bit like the photos of Henry I have seen, or is it me just wishful thinking LOL!

Odin looks incredibly like Henry. For a short while some of us were convinced he was Henry come back from heaven! Over on Ospreys there is an extensive analysis of the comparison between Odin and Henry.
Can you elaborate "Ospreys" for me please Tiger ~ where?
So with a male osprey supposedly around the big question is "Is it Odin?"
