Morning all:  Long day at the rose garden - poor Robert who supervises the volunteers has been fighting off a bug and a couple of us stayed on longer than usual to help him clean up stuff.  I'm sure I'll be stiff tomorrow. Not as many folks showed up as last year and some of the beds were pruned by city employees which means we'll have to go over those beds again since they did a fairly perfunctory job.

Watching Mad Men (Netflix rental video of first season).  Great viewing when you're too tired to think. Take care all and have a nice Sunday.

  • DJOAN  Lucky lucky you, what a beautiful little bird.

  • Dibnlib:Just caught Val as she was leaving and she was moaning that she was at the gym 5 days last week and she had put on a pound....chorus from the changing room "it's muscle". She made me laugh as she was standing on her towel so she didn't get sticky feet!! I handed in my letter so should get my marching orders soon...but no manager at present as he has been suspended. You could't make it could you.

Hope your trainers are feeling comfy....it's nice setting targets, so good luck.

Nice drive home down the A9 and spotted a red kite enjoying the sunshine.

MARGO   How good to hear that Billy whizz is getting braver.

WENDY Saw Val this am and after 2 months unemployed she started 16hrs pw with Markies restocking in the evenings. She is now working 23hrs pw in food dept stocking and tills. Really enjoying it. Hadn't realized she had been more or less forced out of DW when they changed her start time and refused to budge- more fool them. OH said his side was much cleaner today so maybe someone is listening/reading.  Thought I might try the x trainer tomorrow but not sure if I can get appropriate footwear on yet. Off to try  them on now.

A while since I made one of my fav fish meals so had it for lunch today. Smoked cod and leek risotto, both agreed it was delich and gave it 12/10.

Hi dibnlib, that smoked cod and leek risotto sounds nice have you got the recipe for it i would like to have a go at making it thanks

  • Margobird Please remind me when it is you are volunteering at LG.  I'm trying to arrange a holiday in Nethy Bridge and it would be great if it was when you're at LG

  • ALICAT     recipe says smkd haddock, I use cod or haddck and both work well. Serves 4

Small knpb butter    1 large leek, thinly sliced      10oz risotto rice    1 1/4 pt veg or fish stock    9oz milk (I use mix of milk and wine    13oz smkd haddock, cut into large chunks    3 tbsp creme fraiche    4oz spinach

1 Heat oven to 200/180 fan/gas 6. Heat butter in large ovenproof dish and cook leeks for 5 mins, stirring regularly till just tender. Add rice and stir for further 2 mins

2 Add stock and milk, bring to boil and bubble for 5 mins, before sitting fish on top. Cover and cook for 18 mins till rice is tender.

3 Fold in creme fraiche and spinach, season, cover for 3 mins and serve- the spinach will soften in the steam without overcooking

Enjoy    So easy, I have put it on main page for all and highly recommend it.

  • Hi, all. I forgot to wish everyone a happy full moon!!! This is the "FULL WOLF MOON".

    http://www.almanac.com/video/full-moon-january-video

  • Gone really cold outside – OH said it would be too cold to take me out, I asked if he would have intended to, and he said no!  Left some vegs roasting in oven so will continue from where I left off replies!  Lots of posts here today – enjoyed reading them all.

Annette – pleased you saw the Monarchs during your whizzing – are you having a quieter day today?

Diane – how wonderful that your Red-Tailed Hawk welcomed you home!  So pleased too that the Dogs made you welcome at your friends’ house – even if it did result in bruises.  And I really like the photos of Dandy.  I hope you got supplies in on the way home to last you through the coming storm.  Our river went back where it belongs after only one day – and dry weather since.  Thanks for asking about Son – he did get the application in on time last week.  Great progress today – he got up for an early morning session at the gym – first time for many weeks - and said he felt good after it.

Patricia – pleased to see you again!  And Paul too – enjoy your Tweeting!

Dibnlib – so agree about litter of any kind.  See you also got your RSPB Magazine – a page in it about tracking our lovely Ospreys – but please be prepared for tears, they mention Deshar’s record flight over the Atlantic!  We are revisiting some of our favourite recipes, having sorted the file, but never was at all adventurous with fish, so not sure about trying it in risotto - - - I see recipe comes later – maybe will give it a try!  Usually put spinach in fish pie, so not much different really, just a different carb!

Trish – so sorry about Mia and the gunshots – not nice for anyone, but have known several “gun-shy” Border Collies.  Re Ptarmigan – I would imagine the season has the proviso “if you can spot them”!

Margo – your minus four was colder than us, but then for both of us sunshine to follow, so it’s not all bad.

Joan – sorry to read about your bad back – such tiring pain when it’s the back which is affected.  I hope it will not last much longer.

Alicat – thanks for names of little Hummers!

Wendy – Red Kite – lovely birds.

Diane – photo of the moon yesterday in a pretty Lavender-coloured sky, about the time of sunset:

Had dinner partway through compiling this - and going to have a quiet evening now after some very busy days.  OH will do some normal cleaning tomorrow as cleaner is having the day off for the birth of her first grandchild by scheduled Caesarean section - known to be a girl.  I will visit the ironing pile!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
