Weekly Chat, Sunday, January 16, 2011

Morning all:  Long day at the rose garden - poor Robert who supervises the volunteers has been fighting off a bug and a couple of us stayed on longer than usual to help him clean up stuff.  I'm sure I'll be stiff tomorrow. Not as many folks showed up as last year and some of the beds were pruned by city employees which means we'll have to go over those beds again since they did a fairly perfunctory job.

Watching Mad Men (Netflix rental video of first season).  Great viewing when you're too tired to think. Take care all and have a nice Sunday.

  • Morning all,

Diane : Welcome back. Thanks for the link. Not read it yet but will come back to it later.

Linda : Sorry you had a bad day yesterday and hope that today is much better. Lovely springtime photo.

Brenda : Notice that your daff bulbs are up 2 inches. I had a look for mine yesterday and couldnt see any sign.

Thanks to everyone else for the chat. Pictures of Lily (song by The WHO). etc

Took Hamish for his walk this morning and noticed that there was a slight grass frost. I also noticed that some of the catkins have come to life on the bushes beside the field where I walk. It is lovely and sunny today after a horrible day yesterday. Temp is 3.9c.

  • Good Mornng ALL. The rain has stopped ! Everywhere very wet and grey cloud.

Annette, Your new chair sounds like a bargain and they are going to assemble it. I don't think your OH would have been too pleased if you had brought it home for him to do.

Wendy/ dibnlib, I am getting rather worried about the cleanliness at your gym. Hope it all gets solved quickly for you.

OG,  I noticed that the temperatures were beginning to drop. As you say it must have been a shock to wake up to a frost. We have started clearing the paper and the shredder is very busy. OH wants to know why I have ' gone mad' this morning. I told him it was all your fault.

Linda, Sorry about your printer problem. We have an HP printer and we order our HP ink through Amazon, which is cheaper. Thanks for your cheerful Spring photograph.

Diane, Will look at your link later and look forward to hearing about your 'break' .

Thanks for all your news and pictures.

  • Norfolk Botanical Eagle cam goes live today. Not daylight there yet but here is the link:
    http://www.wvec.com/marketplace/microsite-content/eagle-cam.html

  • Thanks for Eagle cam link, Alan - have added it to my already groaning Favourites list! The sun is trying to filter thru here, and Friend has just invited me on shopping/browsing/light lunch expedition tomorrow, so things are Looking UP!
  • BrendaH: Thanks for your concerns but I am sure girl power pressure will get it sorted. It is part of a very large group and as there is competition in the area they should be worried by negative feedback. I used to promote it on the one area that is giving concern.

  • Just a snippet of trivia from OH also known as spreadsheet man....weknow have 43 mins longer daylight time than on 21st December. So roll on the much longer evenings that we get up here in the Highlands. Downside is when we moved here I couldn't sleep even with lined curtains. Problem now solved with blackout blinds.

  • LINDY  Love your spring garden. Hope things go well for you today.

WENDY  You must be so fit to do the spinning class.   Saw notice today at DW for P/T and F/T general assists. Female only needed. No wonder they can't keep them. When a friends daughter was interviewed they told her that her job would mainly be helping members with any inquiries ; no mention of cleaning. She didn't stay long.

  • WENDY  Really noticed big difference in the time we close our curtains. Managed 34 lengths swimming and 4 walking this am so a big improvement for me.  Todays shower was hot and only found feedback cards on way out so have one home to fill in. OH said he has noticed that the showers on his side are not as clean as could be hoped so guess there is no manger/sup checking.     Enjoy your walk.

  • New blog from Alice and Rothes is fine.

  • Good afternoon all I am a bit late on here today.  Had my usual long trek to the hairdresser to get hair trimmed.  For thefirst time in ages it is a very sunny day.  Much cooler but even though I don't like the cold I would rather it was like this.  We have had so much rain over the past week it is just a treat to see that yellow thing up in the sky.  I think we are promised a frost for tonight.  Have just spent time watching Billy Whizz enjoying the sunshine.  He was on the patio outside the conservatory rolling round in the sun.  He than moved out to our drive and found some sun to sit in and I managed to open our bedroom window very quietly and he stayed while I talked to him for about 20 minutes.  This must be the closest I have ever got to him so far as he was only about 6ft away from me.    He has obviously been around quite a lot this morning as a lot of the food and all the milk had gone when I cam back.  We have changed his food from Go-Kat to Whiskas so perhaps he is enjoying the change.  The birds are also enjoying the sun, in and out of the bath and in full song.  What a wonderful sound when I went out to the garden, they really cheer me up.  We had some torrential rain at about 8.00 last evening accompanied by a bit of thunder and some lightening.  How strange is our weather of late.

dibnlinb well done on swimming all those lengths and walking some too.  That must help with your recovery.

WendyB  you are right about the extra minutes of daylight.  Even on the dark and gloomy days we have been having it is becoming more noticeable.  As we have a very sunny day today it will be interesting to see how much difference that makes.  Glad you have been able to get out for a walk and I bet your pheasants have been really grateful for all the food you have been putting out for them and of course the birds.

Lindybird so sorry you had an awful day yesterday.  Hopefully it is a better day all round for you.  Lovely pic of your garden last Spring.  Goodness knows how long it is going to take for my garden to dry out.  It is as wet as ever I have seen it.  The only thing that seems to be growing a bit are my grape hyacinths which now have a lot of greenery showing through.  Usually see the daffodils starting to come through by now but at the moment there is no sigh of them so I am hoping that all the snow, ice and rain has not killed them.  Have a nice day out with your friend tomorrow and enjoy lunch.

Alan thanks alerting us to the Hampton Eagle cam.  Had a quick look and both eagles were on tne nest and lovely clear pics.  What is good about this cam is they have the facility to zoom in.  Great pic of Phoebe too.

BrendaH I am hoping by now that you have some sun.  Very cloudy first thing but a beautiful day now albeit somewhat cooler with frost forecast for tonight.  Such a treat not to have to put lights on after all the dreadful weather we have had over the past week.

Diane nice to see you back and hope you enjoyed your time away.  Thanks for the link re nesting behaviour, very interesting.

Lynette thanks for the pic of Phoebe and also of Lily.  The bear cam is where I usually look first in the morning to see whether Lily has had cubs.  It will be very interesting to see what Hope does when this happens.

orginal goldfinch lovely pics of the goldfinches and the siskin.  What a wonderful splash of colour.  You and your OH make me feel guilty with your clearing out of things that are no longer useful.  My OH picks up endless brochures which never get looked at and I dare say we have some holiday brochures that go back a few years.  What I did smile at was when you said you both have to agree on what you get rid off.  My OH is a terrible horder, just like his Mum in this respect.  Very hard to get him to throw anything away.  He always says he might need it one day but of course he never does.
