  • Lots of people get confused with Burghley House, which is near Stamford and hosts the horse trials in September, among other activities and Burley on the Hill House, which is the one in the background of photos taken of Manton Bay.  Burley on the Hill was originally owned by the Hanbury family and it was sold to Asil Nadir, the Polly Peck tycoon who fled to Northern Cyprus but is now back in the UK fighting his case.  Joss Hanbury bought it back for much less than he sold it and had it converted into appartments, etc.

Hope that clears up any confusion.

    Great vid of 5R fishing:

It was footage like that which made me realise and marvel at the amount of energy the osprey puts into catching a fish.  I wonder that they live as long as they do!

Your photos are super, SANDY - I value "real life" photos much more than "professional" ones, there's more of a "connected" feeling with them.  It's difficult to express, I expect we know what I mean :-)

  • Thanks Scylla - don't worry, there's no chance of me taking any "professional" ones! LOL

  • Tim Appleton has tweeted:

'Ospreys started migrating from Rutland info due soon on website , reached France so far'

This means that 09(98) or Blue AW(06) (formerly known as Maroon AA(06) - he was ringed again this year as he had lost his darvic ring) have started migration. They were both sat tagged byRoy Dennis as it was thought that they might both visit the same areas as 08(97), who went missing this year and 32(05) and 06(00) who both went missing at the beginning of last year, just so that we would know where they were should anything untoward happen to them. These are exciting times for Rutland Osprey followers - these birds are experienced and have been returning regularly.

  • Thanks for that, Lynda. Looking forward to following them on the website.

Went to MB this afternoon and both 5R and Mrs were there along with two of the juves. Can't be sure if the other one has left, but they'll be leaving any day now.

Last chance to see? Juvenile on the wing at MB.

  • Tim's report about one of our tagged males' departure:

    www.ospreys.org.uk/aw-is-off

All 5 of the Manton Bay family present and correct this morning in Manton Bay, although 5R was perched on his old Goldeneye nest perch, presumably out of earshot of the juvenile on the nest who was food begging incessantly.

  • Lyndab AW, does not mess around does he.  Goes straight for it and nice to see an Adult Osprey that know's what he is doing.  Thanks for posting.

  • I would love to agree with you, bright&breezy, but I think that he should know better, only one of his juveniles has left the nest on migration.  He now has departed leaving the female and two other juveniles - that is not classic behaviour.  But, you know what, we are all seeing such different behaviour in families, singles, juveniles, I actually think that we are going to observe the REAL behaviour of Ospreys in the next few years, because they are going to be around in different counties and colonies are going to be springing up all over the place.

It's a very exciting time for those of us observing Ospreys - and I love it.
