Weekly Chat, Sunday January 9, 2010

Busy all day - will catch up tomorrow. Have a good Sunday all (don't forget to check last pages of previous thread. Somebody has been posting photos of puppies again!)

  • MARGO..   'glad you finally saw your sister though it obviously wasn't easy for you. What a horrid time for her and all the family. hope she ges another scan soon and do hope there is improvement on the horizon.

  • Good afternoon all haven't posted for a while as there hasn't been a lot happening and haven't been able to get about much because of the weather.  Thought we had finally got rid of the white stuff but it came back again on Friday night/Saturday morning. As I live only about 400yds from the coast it wasn't too bad but if you went about another mile from me there was about six inches of snow. The snow had frozen and it made it very difficult to walk. Today it has started to thaw and it is raining so maybe tomorrow I may be able to get out and about again as it gets you down not being able to get out.

I have loved all the chat and pictures that have been posted especially the puppy ones have thought about getting another dog but then I think who would look after it if anything happened to me. During the cold weather the goldfinches that used to come to the feeders seemed to disappear but they have returned this morning when the temp. was a bit higher and why do blackbirds rather chase each other rather than just keep feeding when there is plenty for them all.

Off now to have my lunch and I hope every one keeps well and those with problems gets them sorted soon.

  • Just had a look at  the Palemale and Lola site and apparently Lola has been missing since December 17th.  Palemale seems to have found a new female so perhaps they will be successful in raising some young.  Sad to think that after all this time Lola has disappeared.

  • Still wet, all white stuff gone.  Much warmer, so went right through house opening windows, then round again closing them not to waste heat – air indoors feels much more healthy!  OH loading car for tip trip.  Not baking – found various smaller tasks to occupy me!

Lindy – sorry about the water pressure.  I hope you found something decent to watch while ironing.

Joan – pleased your OH enjoyed his ski trip – hope you managed to get all your sorting jobs done before his return.  Your lunch sounds lovely – but I’ve just had some, so won’t be over for soup this time!

Margo – I am sorry you found your sister’s situation and condition so distressing.  I hope her husband will be listened to and get some satisfaction from his complaint, rather than more frustrations.

Dibnlib – our chest freezer in the garage has to be defrosted – but not too often – and I can’t do it, as I can’t reach the bottom!  The fridge-freezer indoors (which actually belongs to our Son) is frost-free type.

George – good to see you again – had wondered whether you had weekend snow.  I agree about the silly Blackbirds wasting their energy chasing each other - nothing to do with the breeding season, because there is no pattern to it, just apparently random aggression.  Here are a couple of pictures of one of our aggressive gulls guarding “his” garage roof yesterday and repelling all boarders:

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Well, I'm still unwashed but as the pressure is now nearly back to normal, I'm hoping to hop into the shower before our evening meal, you'll all be glad to hear!  I'm just going to put a bit of a winter stew on the stove after writing this, then I can relax.

margo - Pleased to hear that  you managed to visit your poor sister at last.  Sorry to hear though that its been so hard for them both, and that she has some more treatment to go through.  I shall be thinking about her, and you.   On the brighter side, it sounds as if poor Billy Whizz is beginning to make himself at home nearby to your house, at last.  I do hope so.

OG:  that poor Starling!  What a shame.  Hope your son gets work soon.   The Midland Hotel is still there, in the centre of Manchester - it has been refurbished & brought up to date, and is The Place to stay, now.  We actually looked out of the window high up in the entrance of the Bridgewater Hall, and saw it across the road at Christmastime, with some lovely lights outside and an avenue of trees running away, all lit up - very pretty.

george -   Now, brace yourself!!  I'm going to be fierce - if you really want a dog, just go out RIGHT NOW and get yourself one.  DO NOT put off something like that which will give you pleasure, with excuses. You know full well that there are a number of organisations which will rehome a dog if its owner cannot care for it, later on in life.  Meanwhile, you and the dog could be enjoying each others company very much for many years to come.  If it makes you feel better, just get one from a rescue centre where they are always looking for good homes - I know without even having met you that you will be a wonderful and responsible dog owner, and that you could give many times over the pleasure & love to an animal that he/she will give back to you.  PLEASE, JUST GO AND DO IT!

margo - shocked to hear that Lola is missing, after all this time. Do hope she turns up, later.

  • Quick look in - landscapers bashing about all around the place; will catch up later but just wanted to say hallo to Margobird; so sorry your B-in-L has gone through so much while trying to look after your sister.  Doesn't sound like anyone was paying attention. Do hope the communication improves. Very sressful time for you all.

  • Hi Annette - you are being beseiged!  We shall want photos of the completed project when you are all done and dusted.

Regarding the Post in the UK over Christmas -  several of you have mentioned that all has not been good.  We received no less than four Christmas cards just before New Year, another one on Friday last,  and hopefully, our last one for this year last Saturday!   And today I received a sales brochure marked "Special offers if you order before 31st December....."  This was together with a Bank Statement - for November last......  Presumably this is all because of the bad weather we had over the Christmas period.

EDIT   You will all be pleased to hear that I've now managed my shower & that my OH is in there at present. Whilst I did the ironing, I watched the drama "Toast" which was a play about the young Nigel Slater (Chef & TV Cook) growing up in a house where his mother, poor thing, was an abysmal cook but was later replaced by a stepmother who was just the opposite!  Shan't name the cast list as too long, but just to say that they were all excellent, and the drama was very good indeed.

  • Well-fed yet again!  Called it Provencal Chicken, but it was a cheats version – smothered pan-fried chicken with home-made ratatouille from freezer!  Trying to save power by cooking things together, since one day I found myself with four elements of a meal in/on steam oven, main oven, microwave and hob!  OH is looking for places to stay for possible trip to Angus later this year!  We have a brief stay in East Lothian booked for Mid-March, and I don’t really want to think further ahead, although we have made a wish-list.

Lindy - pleased that you - and OH - have managed successful showers.  I support what you suggested to George.  If he were to take a rescue dog, surely any organisation would take it back if the time came when he could no longer manage it; but I am sure they could have many happy years together – and he knows from before what having a dog entails, so it wouldn’t be an unknown quantity.

Annette – pleased work is going on around you!

Ought to think what we are doing this evening – maybe some TV catch-up, such as Just William (with that lovely boy from Outnumbered).

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Lovely views of Lily and Hope right now!
