2024 Season (link)

At the beginning of May,  just after we celebrated an improved start to the season for Brodie and Asha (née Mistle), catastrophe descended upon the nest, in the form of KL5-Klive, whose aggression had ruined the end of 2023 for the two fledged siblings.

Brodie and Asha had returned on 06 and 07 April respectively.

02 May 2024 - BlueKL5 "Klive" destroyed/kicked out all eggs.

Brodie was soon overpowered and he fled, returning occasionally.

Axel was seen to intrude very occasionally.

On 07 May SheilaFE reported: Sunday 05 May 2024 20:36:24 KL5 flies off the nest to chase an O flying by – last time Klive is seen on Sunday evening engaging in an aerial battle. Maybe he got his behind kicked and is laying low?

But he returned Unamused

Klive wooed Asha, unwelcome and incompetent (re mating), and teasing and selfish (fish-wise), Brodie made the odd appearance, and in the end
Asha left early, leaving Klive to assert himself over the nest area for the rest of the season.

This was Imagicat's take on the season (thanks to ChloeB Heartand Tiger Tiger2).

Brodie & Asha - so very similar!

Klive-KL5 (Blue)

He'll be 5 years old this season - might he have matured in the right direction?

The as-yet untended nest (and cam)

.

The nest cam is glitchy and the PTZ is offline.  There is no news from LG HQ.  WildlifeWindows' own YT channel has only peregrine falcon streams active.

This is a very busy OP - but who knows who may turn up? and we do hope one familiar face (or feathers) in particular turns up:

    22 April

05:06 = Brodie - he's still there, stood stock still, just waiting:

    .

Oops - he flew just as I posted.

I haven't been able to keep my eye on this cam so there may be in-betweens - but someone just landed, looking a bit defensive, then relaxed into nestcupping.  It certainly doesn't look like Klive!

(I'm trying to do some Glaslyn from days ago, it's hell !!! )

It's Brodie - I hope he hasn't got something around his neck - can't see it later on:

    You got this Brodie!

If only Asha would return - in full swing!

    It's sunny with frequent breezes:

Brodie just flew... don't know where, he's not on the nest.

  • Great 'snaps' and video . Many thanks Scylla

  • Morning All.  What a golden morning we had just after 06.00

As the sun rose, so the shadows lengthened and gold became diluted

What lovely captures you posted, Scylla.  Thank you.

05.18 Brodie was on the nest early, but flew at 05.19.  He gracefully returned at 06.56 and began enthusiastic nestorising and nest cupping.

07.39 Brodie flew off, PTZ, towards the old nest site.  Scylla's lovely captures showed him on Odin's perch.  I too, noticed something dangling from him.  It appeared to be attached to his left talon.

which was more evident when he stood on his right leg while he preened.

I wonder whether it is a bit of bedding material somehow caught after his energetic nest cupping.  It looks biological to me, rather than a fishing line.

08.11 Brodie flew off.  Cam focused on the nest.   ENS

10.33.19   Osprey lands on nest.  Looks around and flies off.  Poss a female.

                     Cam zooms out a bit.

10.35        Brodie lands on nest with an enormous fish, and mantles.  Must have been followed in.

    10.36.25   Brodie is still mantling

10.36.44   Brodie flies off the nest with the fish.

10.38        Cam finds Brodie with fish on a tree beyond the nest.  It's some way from the nest, the cam has a wobble.  It must be an illusion, but the fish has a blue hue to it.

A FIRST ever for me and thankfully Ian had everyone in the walkway hide.
We had an osprey dive get a fish, and fly though the hole cut in the netting for the camera, ending up with an Osprey and fish in the hide, thankfully that hide was empty otherwise photographers would have had and Osprey and fish in the hide with them.
The male osprey left the fish in the hide, popped out the hole in the netting and flew off unscathed.
We were left with a fish flapping about on the hide floor.
Talk about an osprey down the lens, that one would have been on the photographers.

  • KL5(20)m Klive was seen fishing at Aviemore Ospreys yesterday.  A photo by Nick Withers was posted on their FB page (public domain).

I hope they put it back in the pond!

Here's the unspectacular video of the intrusion by unknown unringed Osp:
