-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the beginning of July, all continued to go well (with both PF4 and PF5 successfully taking their maiden flights on the 9th and 13th respectively) until the middle of the month. On the 15th, NC0, after attempting to snatch a meal from her eldest offspring, was forced off the nest by PF4. Sadly, this could have been the last sighting on camera this season of such a fabulous mum. Had she started her migration so early?

Without NC0 around, things on the nest then seemed to go into disarray. PF5 began to show a lot of dominance over his sister and, on the 21st, took control of the nest. After an early morning fish delivery on the 23rd and then being 'harassed' by PF4, who tried take his meal, he himself was ousted once he had flown off nest to eat in peace. Since then, PF4 has been in charge of the nest. On the 25th, PF5 made an heroic attempt to reclaim the nest from his sister, showing off his spectacular dive-bombing skills - however this did not work.

Laddie's fish deliveries to the nest have been fraught to watch and they have almost caused him harm. PF4 has been extremely overpowering and aggressive towards him in her attempts to claim most of the fish that he has brought to the nest. There is much worry over PF5 and whether he is being fed off nest. Hopefully, that is the case now that he has claimed his own 'patch' elsewhere on the reserve.

Early evening, on the last day of the month, PF4 was seen live on cam diving from the split birch to successfully catch her first fish, albeit a tiny one. She had been making many unsuccessful practise dives from the birch on previous occasions. An initial one, witnessed on the 18th, can be viewed in this SWT video.

  • Sandra, no, the first one wasn't a Greenfinch, It has a very pronounced eye stripe, and looks pretty greenish. Probably a Willow warbler.

  • Aww, I'd so hoped it was! lol Thank you, what a pretty bird :)
  • A brief catch up...

As far as I have seen through scrolling through the footage, PF4's last visit to the nest perch, and the nest itself, was between 7:57 and 8:50

    Just prior to her leaving

She flew up towards the cam...

...then veered off to the left

I could hear her calling faintly, and very briefly, in the far distance after she had left. I was watching 'live' at 9:59 when I heard her call before landing on the cam post

I assume she had flown from there at some point as, at 10:14, the cam zoomed over to the birch...

...then a quick zoom onto the nest cup before going back to the normal pre-set

Since then, on every check-in that I've been able to do, PF4 has not been on the birch and I haven't heard her calling.

    Scene at 13:04

Where are you PF4 and, of course, Laddie?

  • I was at the VC for a short while earlier today but all quiet and no one in the hide knew of the whereabouts of anyone. Guess PF4 has gone a flyabout. It is possible without LM12 appearing she will venture.
Went 1-2 miles direct north to Mill Dam and there was one osprey around the dam but difficult to see if it was ringed or not. Others watching Mill Dam said an osprey was around Rotmell Loch and Dowally Loch but these are less than 1km apart so likely to be the same osprey.
PF4 was seen earlier passing the inlet toward Loch of Craiglush - this the small water stretch connecting both lochs.
I went further to Loch Ordie where two ospreys were on the loch.
Again this is about 5km from LOTL and ospreys regularly hang around here.
There were ospreys on Loch Clunie also towards Blairgowrie and many of these could well be the intruders we see around LOTL.
This does not help in finding a particular osprey but if somewhere you can get a decent detailed map you will see the areas around where the ospreys congregate near to LOTL. I use a detailed paper copy OS map with me otherwise I would be lost.
No wiser on any of the LOTL four.
Rothiemurchus used to fish all these lochs I have mentioned - Loch Ordie was a favourite and was seen several times at LOTL. A popular few lochs.
  • Hello Keith,

Thank you so much for detailing your travels today and very much appreciate the information regarding nearby Lochs.

I found this on ©Google Maps which shows those you mentioned. It's great to gain the perspective of their proximity to LotL.

    Once again, many thanks Relaxed

Yes that is the area. Most of the ospreys I have watched this season away from the VC has been in the area Ballinluig to Dowally taking in Loch Ordie. We have been staying in Pitlochry renting after selling our house in Dunblane. It has been great watching all season and have seen ospreys on Loch Faskally near the house. Well the season nearly coming to an end and as they migrate my new home in St Andrews reaches settlement date. Today was a much better day to watch - we have had some miserable weather as well as the diminished fish supplies making life difficult for the ospreys. The reader on the Pitlochry Dam show one of the lowest fish counts in years. The fish club at Dunkeld House on River Tay has been below par and the catches beside the house on the River Tummel have been low. There is a lull in flow where the river Tummel meets the River Tay near to Ballinluig and have seen ospreys catching here this season.
  • Hopefully, the other Lochs will have a better supply of fish for the Ospreys - it's certainly a worry, Keith.

I was unable to post this earlier this evening. I'm unsure if this was an Osprey flying in the birch area at 20:06 - there were no calls.

It appeared from behind the greenery on the left

    Veering off to the left

Then it went out of view after this pic

    Scene, pre-night cam, at 22:00.

I'm feeling very concerned about Laddie, it's been 5 days since he last made an appearance on the nest... Hopefully there'll be a sighting of him and PF4 tomorrow. Thinking of our little Lowes family. Pensive

  • Morning All,
One (PF4?) landed on the birch at 9:42, it had flown from around the corner.

Contact calls, rather than fish calls, made on landing

    ©SWT/LotL

  • It flew off, heading to the right, over the Loch, at 10:03ish

Lost sight as it flew higher after this pic

I upped her voice a bit.  I hope everyone enjoys watching the inactive dot on their screen Stuck out tongue winking eye

Seriously tho, I hope she's been eating out of our sight.
