From the beginning of July, all continued to go well (with both PF4 and PF5 successfully taking their maiden flights on the 9th and 13th respectively) until the middle of the month. On the 15th, NC0, after attempting to snatch a meal from her eldest offspring, was forced off the nest by PF4. Sadly, this could have been the last sighting on camera this season of such a fabulous mum. Had she started her migration so early?

Without NC0 around, things on the nest then seemed to go into disarray. PF5 began to show a lot of dominance over his sister and, on the 21st, took control of the nest. After an early morning fish delivery on the 23rd and then being 'harassed' by PF4, who tried take his meal, he himself was ousted once he had flown off nest to eat in peace. Since then, PF4 has been in charge of the nest. On the 25th, PF5 made an heroic attempt to reclaim the nest from his sister, showing off his spectacular dive-bombing skills - however this did not work.

Laddie's fish deliveries to the nest have been fraught to watch and they have almost caused him harm. PF4 has been extremely overpowering and aggressive towards him in her attempts to claim most of the fish that he has brought to the nest. There is much worry over PF5 and whether he is being fed off nest. Hopefully, that is the case now that he has claimed his own 'patch' elsewhere on the reserve.

Early evening, on the last day of the month, PF4 was seen live on cam diving from the split birch to successfully catch her first fish, albeit a tiny one. She had been making many unsuccessful practise dives from the birch on previous occasions. An initial one, witnessed on the 18th, can be viewed in this SWT video.

  • Very much hope so, Freebird...

It has been ENS since PF4 left the nest perch at 7:26

She looked to the right and began to fish call

More calling as she tracked whoever (Laddie?)

She flew off in that direction

Her calls trailed off into the distance

9:23 She's just landed back on the nest - fish calling

I'm out for the day so will catch up later. Fingers crossed for Laddie bringing her a fish larger than the one she caught earlier! BFN

  • Fab news re Laddie, thanks for passing it on SANDRA Hugging

Have a lovely day, and here's my effort for this morning up to about 10:15, almost blow-by-blow account of PF4's activities - I shall continue after catching up on some other cams.

  • At the end of a long afternoon PF4 was on the birch but was lost between sessions so I don't know what happened next.  I had a look at rollback but could not cope with it.  I don't know where she is now.

  • Scylla, than you so very much for all of your endeavours with the videos today! ThumbsupHugging

  • PF4 paid a very short visit to the nest at 19:37. She was quiet and looked around before flying off to the birch

    Still there at 19:56

  • I didn't hear PF4 calling before she left the birch at 20:35

She headed off down the inlet

As of 20:50, PF4 has not returned to the nest or birch

  • 22:00 It appears that PF4 is not roosting on the birch again tonight

So hoping for a sighting of Laddie tomorrow... Pray

She was still on the birch but my tired ole eyes let me down!

17:22:31 (the session start was timed @ 17:00 so it was easy to work out) - final dive of the day?  It looked as tho she thought about it again later but aborted.  This ends with her flight up the inlet and goodnight Purple heart

Between PF4's visits, we had 2 little birdies foraging individually:

  • 06 August

PF4's early visit (dear Sandra will say the time - I worked it out and promptly forgot it) - she flew out to the birch.  I haven't done any more, am logging off now:

  • Good morning Scylla and All,

Many thanks, Scylla! I made the time 7:04 Wink  As for those two little foragers, was the first one the elusive Greenfinch we've heard singing this season?

PF4's initial visit this morning was at 5:13, she flew from the inlet to arrive on the nest perch

She flew around the back trees to make her approach

She stayed on there for around 10 minutes before flying off to the right
