Continued from Manton Bay - June 2023
Details about the Manton Bay nest can be found on the season’s opening post.
The season so far: Blue 33(11) returned March 16 @ 12:58 and Maya on March 19 @ 06:54. Maya has laid four eggs - Apr 4 @ 15:52, April 7 @ 09:04, April 10 @ 07:03 and April 13 @ 08:08. 38 days later on May 12 @ 08:18 the first chick hatched followed by chick #2 on May 14 @ 06:36 and chick #3 was first seen @ 05:45 on May 17. Chick #4 hatched on May 18 @ 18:53 and not long after a live fish was delivered to the nest causing havoc and the little chick died the following morning. On June 24, the chicks were ringed – Blue 3H3(F), Blue 3H4(M) and Blue 3H5(F).

Over the next few days we will see the chicks flapping, strengthening their wings ready to take that great leap of faith and fledge.
04:18 first visit to the nest
04:43 and another
very difficult to see who's who
05:44 Maya arrives and collects the fish
07:55 33 stands looking around
Karen W said: think this will be the first we've seen a juvie take off with a fish from the nest.
Actually. 3H4 did the same on Saturday.. kind of by intention too

Morning ALL
04:45 3H5 arrives early and calling for breakfish
05:52 Maya arrives with a fish tail in talon
quickly snatched by 3H5 who follows
05:53 3H3 approaches - she has a large headless fish in talon
3H5 grabs hold of 3H3's foot along with the fish!!!!
and doesn't let go
eventually free
3H5 tucks in
that fish should keep the family going but the juvies will fly on and off and no doubt lose them.
out most of the day - catch up later
Thanks Karen. Was a fun struggle. Here's a video of the above pics..BTW: 3H4 finally made it to the nest today at 8.37.. he was late! But he did take the fishtail
Spectacular!!
Blue 33(11) is again an awesome dad.. after 3H4 loses his fish.
A fresh fish, and 3H4 decides to eat it in quiet, so he leaves with it. flying by the nest a moment later..
Meanwhile an osprey (33 probably) is divebombing a swan in the background.
Then 3H4 returns to the nest.. only he's a bit heavier than usual and misjudges the height... losing the fish in the process.
33 being the awesome dad that he is, saw it all happening and delivered a fresh fish to the nest. 3H5 is quick to grab it, not letting her brother take it away again.
33 brings a good trout to the nest. 3H4 is there to take it..
Later Maya picks up the fish (meanwhile 3H5 had a good meal too)
Then... 3H4 arrives with the fish.. must have been transferred off nest by Maya
23 July
I happened upon this whilst trying to sort out the mess I'm in
