Continued from Manton Bay - June 2023

Details about the Manton Bay nest can be found on the season’s opening post.

The season so far:  Blue 33(11) returned March 16 @ 12:58 and Maya on March 19 @ 06:54.  Maya has laid four eggs - Apr 4 @ 15:52, April 7 @ 09:04, April 10 @ 07:03 and April 13 @ 08:08.  38 days later on May 12 @ 08:18 the first chick hatched followed by chick #2 on May 14 @ 06:36 and chick #3 was first seen @ 05:45 on May 17.  Chick #4 hatched on May 18 @ 18:53 and not long after a live fish was delivered to the nest causing havoc and the little chick died the following morning.   On June 24, the chicks were ringed – Blue 3H3(F), Blue 3H4(M) and Blue 3H5(F).

Over the next few days we will see the chicks flapping, strengthening their wings ready to take that great leap of faith and fledge.

  • Great day for stories today (with the push and the fish..). Thanks Karen for the pics again.
But this one was amazing too..
3H5 goes of the nest.. and dives into the bay.. twice!!

  • That was amazing - I wouldn't have expected her to be diving so quickly after fledging. Thanks for sharing, Bart.
  • Morning ALL

Scrolling back, the nest remained empty overnight until

04:25  Maya arrives on the nest

04:26  3H3 arrived and grabbed one of the fish

04:28  Maya flew off and 3H5 arrived

04:34  3H4 arrives but has to wait his turn as both his sisters are tucking into the two fish left overnight on the nest

04:53  3H3 and 3H5 have both flown leaving 3H4 to have his share

05:14  Maya arrives and juveniles quickly follow wanting some fish from mum

05:23  Maya continues to dish out fish, 33 arrives and grabs the other

05:33  All juveniles fed and flown, Maya and 33 now have their breakfish

Whole family fed and off flying around the bay, the juveniles strengthening and practicing their flying skills for that long flight ahead of them

    Well Karen..

3H4 does the same today!! At 12:50:23 in the video (wanted to show the whole sequence).
Funny how his sisters look at him we he gets back wet. "Well done little brother!"
Maybe.. this will be the first where a Juvie takes a fish back to the nest (never seen that)..

  • Thanks Bart - 3H4 now - wow!! I cannot recall having seen this but we do have a better viewing angle this year.

I remember Roli catching and returning to the nest (can't remember the nest) with a small fish also I think a juvenile has at the Lowes - Sandra will know.

I have reported on this thread since 2014 and I've never seen or read of a Manton Bay juvenile catching and bringing a fish to the nest!

But never say never - this may be the year :-)
  • 04:28  All on the nest waiting on breakfish

one by one they fly off arrived back @ 06:52 yelling for fish

    06:52  33 approaches with a large fish

they make a dash for it

    soon tucking in and waiting

    then tug of fish

and eventually the last one has its share

08:25  Juveniles all fed,  Maya now arrives and stands with the fish

08:43  still standing, having some herself

and then after no one comes back for more, she flies off with it

    Hi Karen,

Roli, KA5(19), was from Llyn Brenig - parents B24 and HR7.

As for Lowes, PT4(19) was witnessed actually catching a fish and she brought it back to the nest. Last season, there was a possibility that LP8 did the same BUT there may have been a handover away from the nest after he'd had a bath, nothing caught on cam - he was definitely wet when he landed with a live fish.

    Hope that helps Thumbsup
