HAPPY NEW WEEK!

I hope everyone has a serene, peaceful week.

My only news is that the male Eastern Kingbird arrived this evening, completing his migration all the way from South America. He is very early this year. Some of you may remember the year the Kingbirds got into my garage and nested there, wildly attacking me every time I sought my lawn mower. Lol They are bold, brave, and extremely aggressive birds.

Tonight, he landed briefly on my porch window screen and gave me a long look, then he flew around the house to his old nest site. Over the last 3 or 4 years, the male and I have established a detente. They nest in a big fallen tree in my back garden, and I leave them alone. Lol These days, his aggression is mild and more ceremonial than dangerous. Lol I'm very glad he made it back!

Enjoy your week, all.

  • Welcome, Kingbird King! Rest easy and enjoy your nest with Diane.

Thank you for starting us off again Diane. There have been very sad reports of terrible storms & tornadoes in the southern US of A. I am sorry to hear of the deaths and destruction.
  • We have stayed up late to watch the final episodes of a TV version of War & Peace (from 2016) which I brought with me on DVD.

Seeing the senseless deaths & pointless war seemed to remind us of something nearer to home: the Ukraine war which is still raging.

  • In reply to Lindybird:

LINDY: Yes, the news is very sad. I hope you are having a wonderful time on your holiday. I've enjoyed your photos and descriptions very much. Please send some of that warmth and sunshine. Lol That's certainly a lovely and peaceful place.
  • Annette - The windmills do have angled slats. The scenery is bleak in parts, with few trees, but the population seem to have managed to scratch a living on tiny farms and by fishing in the seas which have many kinds of fish. Nowadays, of course, the main Iiving here is tourism- there are many Europeans here including mainly Germans, British & Scandinavians.
  • In reply to Diane in Indiana:

Diane, Glad you've enjoyed. More photos & descriptions to follow. Sorry to hear of your problems.
  • Good morning DIANE and thank you for our start and your Kingbird news.

More news from LINDA. Aren’t you meant to be on holiday. . . not chatting to us? <big grin> Ignore me, I am enjoying your pics and descriptions of yet another place I shall never see.

Next Sunday our clocks change from daylight saving. A lovely cool day here, light rain. Yeay, love it. Over the last few days I have been hearing lots of lorikeets or rosellas in the nearby trees. I have not seen any to identify which.

  • Thanks for the new thread, Diane.
For anyone interested, here is Cornell Lab's link for the Eastern Kingbird, a handsome creature if ever there was one:

    Kind regards, Ann

  • In reply to Gardenbirder:

Hi, ANN. So nice to see you tonight. Hope you are keeping well and you had no trouble with your jab. Yup, those Kingbirds are handsome little critters. They always make me feel empowered. Thanks for the link! Have a good week.
  • Hallo all:  Bird news from this part of the world involves a killdeer that landed on a high school football field and has so far laid four eggs.  Not sure if you can access the video; if you do, you have to put up with some stupid ads first. https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/video/huntington-beach-high-school-protects-killdeer-bird-eggs-on-school-track/

Diane:  Thank you!   Interesting that your latest visitor is so early.  Maybe that tree is primo real estate in his book and he's determined not to lose out.  :-)

Lindybird:  I can imagine the sunshine is a big draw, but I think I'd need more greenery.

    Have a good Sunday everyone.

  • A wonderful post Diane, thank you. Congrats on your detente with the  kingbird. I'll leave others to report on all the returned Ospreys
