LLYN BRENIG August 2022

Link to JULY 2022

Our Osprey family taken on 7th July, 2022.

Our chicks on 31st July, 2022. Olwen flying in to join her family.

This was a new nest erected for 2022 season to replace the one vandalised in 2021 after this pair and just laid their first egg.

Our male, blue LJ2  (2018 South Argyll) arrived on 6th April 2022.

Our female, blue LM6  (2018 Menteith, Stirling) arrived on 10th April 2022.

This is our young adult osprey pair’s first successful breeding season.

First egg  25th April. Second egg 28th April. Third egg 1st May.

Eggs hatched 1st June, 3rd June, 5th June (3rd chick died on day of hatching) Broken heart

Chicks ringed ringed 4th July, chick #1 blue X6 female,  chick #2 blue KA9 male.

Chicks named  7th July - X6 Olwen - KA9 Gelert as chosen by public vote on Brenig Facebook.

8th July, it was noticed LM6’s blue darvic ring had split and fallen off her leg onto the nest on 7th July.  She now only has a silver BTO ring on her right leg.

The first born chick, X6/Olwen fledged at 55 days old at 12.45 on 26th July.

The second born chick KA9/Gelert fledged at 55 days old at 07.29 on 28th July.

Today on 1st August, the chicks are 61 and 59 days old respectively.

  • 13.40, an Osprey flies from the trees past the nest with a stick.

Seconds later it lands on the nest and reveals itself as LJ2.

He picks up the stick in his beak and lays it down at the top of the nest.

He did a wee bit of housekeeping then flew off back into the trees.

  • 15.15 Gelert arrives on the nest fish calling.

Seconds later LJ2 arrives with a small live fish.

Seconds later, here she comes - Olwen in full flight.

Gelert collected the fish from dad

then Olwen took it from her brother. He’ll have to get used to this being a male. Hopefully he’ll be feeding his own family one day in a few years time.

With the fish hers now, Olwen had a nice wee meal to herself. Gelert stayed, reminding Olwen he was there!

    And down goes the tail.

  • Llyn Brenig Facebook posted this information earlier for anyone hoping to visit and see the ospreys.

  • Despite the chicks coming to the nest fish calling on and off for the last few hours, it wasn’t until Gelert arrived at just before 21.00 when LJ2 finally came in just after with another small live fish - pike.

A clear shot of the fish but layered effect on LJ2

Olwen had arrived at this point too, both chicks were shouting for the fish but Gelert took it.

Olwen still shouting how hungry she is as Gelert eats.

Olwen tackles a scrappy piece of skin dropped but eventually moves in for the fish, which she manages to take.

Olwen finishes it off and Gelert finds a scrap or two.

Hopefully, there’ll be more fish supplied tomorrow.

  • I haven’t seen LM6 on the nest today. Usually she delivers a fish or two or arrives when LJ2 comes in with a fish. Really hope to see her tomorrow. HeartFingers crossed
  • Thursday, 4th August

Good morning all. Quick scroll back this morning and no sign of LM6 yet. 05.30 LJ2 on perch with Gelert  on the nest.

  • Morning Glider & ALL

Thanks for all the updates, hopefully LM6 turns up soon.
  • 09.24, Olwen is sitting relaxing on the nest. Incoming calls are heard and LJ2 arrives with a small fish.

    Gelert promptly arrives too.

    Olwen takes the fish

    and eats it all.

  • 09.55 And look who’s arrived on the nest!!!! LM6 HeartHeart️ You’re back! And with some size of a live fish for a happy Gelert who was resting there.

Gelert moves in for the fish

It is so big, he’s pulling with all his might!

Thank you Karen. I was sooooo happy when I got in from work today and did my scroll back. There she was, a bit scrawny looking and needing a good feed, but holding onto a big fish to give away to her chicks.  It’s amazing how fond you get of the birds after a short time watching. Two heartsShe has turned into such a superb first time mother. Heart
