GLASLYN OSPREYS - APRIL 2021 to end of FEB 2022

March thread.

This post updated 01 June

MrsG returned on the 25th of March and was joined by Aran on the 29th.

(The beginning of the reunion video is a must-see for all fans of MrsG - I'm posting it today 01 June, to remind us of a happy time before the tragedies of May 2021.)

The month of May brought unrelenting wind, rain and corvids, as well as persistent intruder KS8 (among others) - and Aran somehow injured his right wing, rendering him unable to fish.  Within a few days all the chicks had sickened and died.  It could hardly have been more stressful for MrsG and Aran, but they are recovering together while the caring Glaslyn team is supplying fish each night.

(The chicks' bodies have been removed from the nest by Aran and MrsG, so we shall never know the cause of their deaths.)

In the right margin of this page are links to Glaslyn's posts documenting the misfortunes on the nest.

Both MrsG and Aran are around this morning.

Cam went down after 45 minutes and I didn't notice until just now.

    Love this:

  • The cam is behaving very badly this morning, when it's up it's going black every few minutes.  A couple of snaps:

Aran flying from electric pole tree (colour marmalised but he shows up better):

Redstart (I only know because BIRDSONG ID'd it on Chat) in 'n out in 30 seconds:

  • I love the comment about the cows and the hide.  What a hoot!

How wonderful that Clywedog KS8(18)f has been seen again.  A little insensitive, but she would be an excellent successor to Mrs G if, heaven forbid, she doesn't return next year.  We cannot sadly forget that she it not a young bird now.

All times are very approximate - I'm not good at sorting out times when they are minus!!

I have been back over the cam and was delighted to see Aran land on the perch, after a lot of blacking/blanking of the camera, at about 14.15.  He stayed there for quite a while before flying to the nest where there was a fish conveniently waiting for him.  He didn't go to it straight away but was looking around, and a little tentative about approaching the fish.

Around 14.47 Aran intruder chipped, and mantled, but he remained on the nest and at approx 14.51 there appeared to be the sound of sky dancing above the nest.  Aran mantles and another osprey flew over the nest.

15.03ish Aran    flew off the nest, with the fish

    A few snips

    Looking very alert

He flew to the nest and spots the fish

It takes a while, but eventually he takes the fish

    to the nest rim

and a crow appeared on the perch.  Aran barked at it!

Aran flew off not long afterwards, leaving me with the sound of a 'lost' lamb, and a chipping blackbird!

The thought had occurred, with the same sentiment

I was going to say that it's an amazing coincidence that I've done a video of Aran at that time, SHEILA - but it's not amazing at all, as nothing much else happened for hours Grin

    I didn't hear the skydancing - but I wouldn't, as I don't play much in real time, I'm a-scrolling all the while.

  • No idea who this was, towards closing time - when it left, it dropped down like a stone!

  • It looks a bit like a pale Mistle Thrush

  • From Glaslyn Facebook
'Aran made a brief appearance on the Glaslyn nest today after he was seen flying near the Visitor Centre. It is the furthest and the highest we have seen him fly since his injury'
  • Excellant news about dear Aran In your video SCYLLA he certainly seems to be holding his wing in abetter position
  • Just for info, in case anyone doesn't know...

This is Aran & MrsG's parking spot - usually it's Aran in front, and he's often there alone for long periods:

Sorry but I'm too late to see if Chat reported anything interesting - I haven't seen anything.  There was a close-up of a corvid on the nest perch but I judged it to be unsnapworthy.

  • A few seconds of a Great Spotted Woodpecker:
