MANTON BAY - MARCH 2021

Brief History of Manton Bay:

The nest at Manton Bay was first used in 2007 by White 08(97) and Green 5N(04) who successfully raised 2 chicks.  In 2008 they paired again but the nest failed and in 2009 it was unused.

In 2010 a new pair, Green 5R(04) and an unringed female nicknamed Mrs 5R, took up residence and over the next four years successfully raised 11 chicks.

Green 5R(04) failed to return in 2014 and Mrs 5R paired with a new mate, Blue 28(10) and laid 3 eggs.  Blue 33(11) arrived determined to claim this nest and evicted Blue 28(10).  Blue 33(11) kicked out the eggs and spent the remainder of the season bonding with Mrs 5R who was then officially named “Maya”.

In 2015 Maya and Blue 33(11) returned and to date have successfully raised 18 chicks including two broods of four the previous two seasons.

Here’s wishing Maya and Blue 33(11) a safe journey home and for another successful season.

  • She first returned in 2013 and was breeding with Blue 11(10)m.  She was seen at MB in 2019 as well as 2020 and this year.  In June 2013 RW produced one of their regular blogs updating on who's who, with whom, what nest and what chicks.

The piece about 25(10) f said:

     25(10)

25(10) is a three year old female who fledged from Site O in 2010.  She is one of AW’s chicks.  She returned for the first time on  28 June 2012.  This year she returned on 7 April 2013 and as a three year old, she is unlikely to breed this year, however she paired up with Male 11(10) on Site C nest and they have produced at least two, possibly three chicks in 2013.

There was also a report of 33!

    33(11)

33(11) is a two year-old (in 2013) male who fledged from Site B in 2011.  He is one of 03’s chicks and is half-brother to 5R.  He hatched on 25 May 2011, fledged on 14 July and was last seen in Rutland on 18 August 2011.  He returned to Rutland for the first time on 11 May 2013.  And again on 6 June 2013.

Edit:  And I also have a note which must have come from a later blog:

    Site C  2013    male 11(10)   female  25(10).

                            Three chicks ringed:    3K(13) F;   4K(13) M; 5K(13) F

                            w/e 23 August - female 25(10) departs

  • Thanks, Sheila, and Blue 11(10) is a full brother of Glesni, Blue 12(10).

Edit:  4K is the only remaining tracked Rutland bird.

    Kind regards, Ann

So Maya married her late husband's brother Smiley

Hardly surprising?  Given our relatively small population...

And lets not forget dear Blue 28(10) aka Wonky Wing who also paired up with Maya between 5R and 33 and he too was an offspring of 03(97) therefore another half brother!!

Hope you have plenty paper JANE LOL

  • The nightcam is on and an EG arrived a few minutes ago.

Another day and no sighting of  Leonardo :-(

  • Two 'X marks the spot' landing areas for Maya and B33 or are they other signals that have been made by the EG? Wink

  • Just to repeat and to add a bit to what others have said, and using information from ukospreys website and River Gwash, 33(11) and 28(10) are full brothers hatched only a year apart with parents of male White 03(97) and an unringed female. Both mated on the Manton Bay nest with Maya (formerly known as Mrs 5R), although 33 ousted 28, which meant that 28 and Maya never had a brood of their own. 33 kicked out 28's eggs and Manton Bay had a non-productive year in 2014. There was great disappointment that year when Maya's previous partner, male Green 5R (04), did not return. 5R was an older half brother of both 33 and 28 with the same father; 5R's parents were male White 03(97) and female Green 05(00), both of whom were birds translocated from Scotland to Rutland Water, and whose own natal nests are not known by most of us, only presumably by Roy Dennis and a small group of compatriots and colleagues (just guessing!). Sadly 28, also known as Wonky Wing due to a damaged right wing, who had been a successful breeder for many years on another nest near Rutland Water, failed to return in 2020, much to the regret of many, especially those at River Gwash fish farm where he had reigned supreme for years over their purpose-built fish pond for Ospreys (and photographers!), seemingly thinking it was his personal fish source, and he chased off many other Ospreys who could only fish there once he had left with his fish.

Edit:  Forgot to add that male 11(10), at least early in the 2020 season, seemed far happier fishing at River Gwash than he had been previously and he was even perching in trees overlooking the fish pond before diving in, something he had not done when 28 was there, but I do not know if he remained the new King of the pond or not during the rest of the season.

    Kind regards, Ann

  • Thank you for all that, GB  Hugging
