Evening all: Off to check previous week's posts.
Good Morning ALL, Grey and dry here this morning.
OG, I know what you mean about all the books. We have had to clear out many of our books and will have to do it again. OH is very reluctant to part with any of his books though. That is quite a diverse list of topics for your talks today.
Margo, I presume that your OH is now back home with you. ( with more washing). A very sad trip for him.
Annette, I was watching a programme last night and I thought of you and all your oranges. They said that oranges are not so popular these days, as people say they haven't got the time to be bothered peeling them. They prefer to just drink the juice !
Linda, Sorry about your broken tooth and glasses. I guess you will be going for an emergency appointment with the dentist today.
AQ, I loved your Jasper story. It is always so worrying when looking after other peoples pets. I used to look after our neighbours cat, which was 18 years old and on the last occasion, it had been ill before they went away. I was terrified it would die before they came home.
Will catch up again later. Hope you all enjoy today.
Good morning BrendaH started off very grey here as well but brightening up a bit now. Not going to last though rain forecast for this evening and all day tomorrow so good job I have caught up with the washing. OH returned from seeing his very sick friend last evening ( with more washing) and things have got even worse as the cancer has spread to his liver now, so not looking good. I think he felt it was quite harrowing to see a friend who was always fit and healthy to be so unwell. He will be going again as he thinks there might not be many more chances.
OH and I are guilty of having too many books but can't bear to give them away. We have boxes and boxed in our garage and loft. I have to keep away from book shops because I always buy if I go in one. It will take the rest of my life to read all the books I have.
Have a good day.
Margobird
Good morning Lindybird and what a pain for you with that tooth and the loss of a bit of your new specs. Hope you can get things fixed before you go away. I always tell my OH I am coming apart bit by bit, everything sags and memory shot away. Getting older is no joke.
How nice of Eric Sykes to reply to you. He makes me laugh and has triumphed over deafness bless him.
Apple pie sounds good and of course you had to have some for testing purposes.
AQ Pleased the newly weds have been reunited with their luggage, must have been a relief for them.
Wishing all I have not mentioned well and take care.
Margo, sorry that matters are worse for your husband's friend. As you say it must have been so upsetting for your husband. I am just off to a Macmillan Cancer Support coffe Morning/ Afternoon.
Morning all: Cloud cover today - just slight - but might keep the temps down. Will head for gym this afternoon and lovely air conditioning!
Margobird: That's sad about OH's friend.
BrendaH: That's so funny about people and oranges. With the Navels, I just wash them off, slice them across the fruit, then halve the slices but leave the rind on so you can sort of bend the slice back and eat the flesh. My OH is weird - he loves pears but unless I slice them and put them on a plate he never gets around to eating them. I think it's because he works at his computer a lot and doesn't want to drip juice everywhere. Still - a bit odd if you ask me.
Have a nice day all.
Hello Margobird - I'm glad that your OH went to see his friend, although it would have been quite harrowing for them both.
Yes, on the topic of books I have to make a real effort to dispose of paperback fiction every now and again. I thought that I was doing quite well until I went up into the loft the other week and spotted a great big bag full of books. Mostly our surplus does the round of the readers in the local family and then either goes to a charity shop or to the little library that has been started in OH's bowling club. I have been going to the local library more often recently.
Speaking of books - hope that you enjoyed the book festival,OG. It must be lovely to be a little more fit/ mobile and able to get out and about more than previously.
Linda - You are dead right., getting older is no fun when it comes to eyes, ears and teeth! I just hope that I don't lose my sense of humour as well as other things :-)
I am not quite at the point of envying those of us that are getting warmer weather but I have been looking rather longingly at my favourite long coat (not that I have many, I hasten to say!)
Take care all
Evening all. Have read but not posted the last few days as we had a weekend agility competition followed by frantic preparation for Scottish holiday - we take the ferry Friday morning/ it's a pretty expensive way to travel, and always hoping for calm weather! I was rushing to get to show on Saturday, pulled down the tailgate of the car and hit my head - lots of blood, a morning spent in A& E instead of competing, and four stitches in my forehead. I shouldn't be let loose! Catching up on the holiday preps now and should be ready in time. I'm another compulsive book buyer. The ones I don't want to keep go to a second-hand bookshop or the animal sanctuary where we got Tweed and Indy.
Was misty this (Tuesday) morning – all the higher hills had disappeared as we went west! No sign of the Buzzards or Kestrels which we saw Sunday, but we did see six red Kites – two and then four, dancing in the sky as Red Kites do. They seemed to be heading for the receding tide line – does anyone know if they scavenge there? Lovely birds. Weather deteriorated all day – no decent words to describe the rain on the way home this evening – it was just $&*#ing it down!
Had hot choc at the Stables Café and collected the scones we had ordered. First talk was a Doctor who is writing of his experiences – he was selling & signing Vol2 (and is writing Vol3). We bought Vol2, but Vol1 paperback is out of print – will try Amazon. His life sounds very interesting – not just straightforward medical practice. Then had late lunch – sweet potato and red pepper soup and a salad. History man was excellent – not really about the archaeology, more about the results of that and research – about Scotland in the “Dark Ages” – “Early Mediaeval” period preferred! Filled a lot of gaps, and we bought his book to learn more. Next was called “Spitfires over Scotland” but this was really a biog of one fighter pilot and a bit “dry” and not worth buying his book! Enjoyed excellent dinner at a bistro within a bookshop – hope I have mentioned that Wigtown is Scotland’s National Book Town, with umpty-plonk bookshops all over. This evening was a great talk/recital on “Songs of Gaelic Scotland” by Anne Lorne Gillies. She spoke in English and sang in Gaelic – we were invited to join in some but my Gaelic pronunciation is too limited, and I can’t sing that high or fast!
Not many posts on here today – hope everyone is ok. Will read and reply Wednesday morning.
Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
Evening all:
OG: You're right - quiet on here; some folks are away on trips.
Patriciat: Oh no! I let the tailgate on our big old truck down the other week and forgot to step back out of the way - got a multi-colored bruise on a (fortunately) well-padded part of my anatomy. You'd think we'd've figured it out by this time. Slow down girl! :-)
Cloud cover kept our temps about 20 degrees lower than yesterday - what a relief! - although it was more humid; still, not bad at all. Off to bed soon - have a good Wallender (Swedish mystery) book from the library. Take care all.
Promised replies to Tuesday posts:
Annette - sorry Monday remained so hot for you – just after you had told us it cools in the evening! I’m sure Daughter appreciated the orange juice – and that the horses enjoyed the hosing down as much as you two! We aren’t in a hurry to replace computer chairs – the old ones (cheap at Ikea many years ago) are a bit shabby but still work – so long as we replace the worn screws from time to time! Often Carrot Cake here has walnuts in - usually very finely chopped – it tends to be the darker, richer recipes - probably made with dark muscovado sugar. I prefer the lighter, paler versions – but still with cream cheese frosting! See Oranges comment in my reply to Brenda - and I have to thinly slice and peel apples to eat them because my teeth are old! Pleased Tuesday was a cooler day with you.
AQ – laughed at Jasper’s scary visit to garden to see birds! Is he normally an indoor cat?
Lindy – oh so busy again! Pleased you had a good night’s sleep, hope last night was equally good.
Brenda – we find so many things interesting that it is hard to choose talks when we get Book Festival brochure. Would normally not try more than three in a day – yesterday was an exception to fit in Spitfires for OH – then he was disappointed in that one too! I have never liked Oranges peeled (or smell of others doing that on the school bus!) – always eat them halved for breakfast with a Grapefruit spoon. When Son lived with Daughter#1 and girls during his unemployment, he was left to Rabbit-sit a number of times. When one was ailing, Gdaughter#2 told him he must not let it die! Eventually, before they went on one particular trip she was told that her Rabbit would almost certainly die while she was away, and she accepted the inevitable on her return – Son was more upset because he had spent so much time with it! Luckily it died the day they were due back, so he didn’t have to keep it too long for the funeral which she had planned!
Margo – sorry your OH’s friend has worsened – I hope at this stage that he doesn’t suffer too long. Funeral next week requests no flowers, but donations to cancer research – so important, and they are making breakthroughs all the time.
Patricia – oh your poor head – do take care of yourself! At least I shall recognise you on Friday!
Day at home today. OH will go printing this afternoon – might finish, or maybe another session tomorrow. He’ll pop out for a rearranged haircut, which would have been next Tuesday. Church Guild meeting this evening – first of the winter term – uurgh don’t mention that word – we haven’t properly had autumn yet! Today dreich and drizzly.
