Lindybird I read this somewhere yesterday and have to confess had never heard about this species of bird before.  Tragic that one was shot though when it is so obvious from what I read that they are sadly in decline.

Agree, Lindybird. I am almost sick when I read about little birds etc shot and eaten in mainland Europe. But I am not a vegetarian, so am I being hypocritical?

  • Sudden rainshower when we set off to Tesco – stopped by the time we got there – just 5 minutes then back to how it was earlier.  Talked ages with someone from church on the way out, so were nearly late being ready for cleaner – and inevitably this was the week she arrived a bit early!

Tiger – thanks for Australian Osprey reminder.

Margo etc – forgot to mention earlier, Sweet Peas are flowering again!  Still bits of colour in all parts of garden, just not very elegant at this time of year!

Lindy – great about the old Whimbrel.  Mixed feelings about shooting, after all it was Wildfowlers who started WWT, and we still have wildfowling licences even on reserves like Wigtown Bay, although not for threatened species.  And I have to admit to enjoying the occasional game casserole or paté just as much as vegetarian equivalents!

That reminds me, must go and put pork in to marinate!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Hello everyone

A beautiful day here, sunny and warmish. OH and I have been busy outside, pruning a tree and continuing with the Autumn tidy up. Still quite a bit of colour in the garden, late flush of roses, lace cap hydrangea, one late clematis in bloom etc. Grapes are ripening fast on the semi outside vine. Victoria plums are finished, as are greengages. I am still pulling baby carrots from the tubs but runner beans in large tub have given up the ghost.

Must go to kitchen duties - best wishes to all.

  • Tiger,i have now read philip browns book

  • Just done the ironing, so thought I would look in.

Heather – glad you got a good day for the garden – I think it was your turn for decent weather!  We still have our daily courgette and the odd handful of runner beans – still carrots, beetroots and potatoes too – a few peapods, but they aren’t very promising.  Bought a head of broccoli today – first shop veg for at least two months (apart from onions which we don’t grow).

Alicat – that was a sudden finish to reading the book – have you been reading into the night?  I hope Casper is still well.

Looking forward to tomorrow – meeting Patricia for coffee as she is making a two-night stopover in Thornhill – only about 30 miles from us – before continuing for her holiday at Nethy Bridge.

That is great news. I would love to hear your comments on it in the "Scottish Ospreys" thread.
