  • Hi all: Hope it's dried out for all the folks who got rained on there. Our inland valleys will be under extreme heat warnings the next day or so - but that just means it'll be around 100. We are driving to Arizona tomorrow with some things granddaughter left in our garage and which she'll need now that she's moved; we'll do the drive (500 miles) in one day, stay a day, then be back Thursday evening all being well.  I'm taking the laptop so will check in as time allows.

Diane: Just checked out that fox vs. nightjar video - fascinating. Loved to see those little chicks scampering to safety (I hope!)

Lindybird: I saw that Flying 101 series of pix and then Googled the airline - found the site and tried a couple fo the links but couldn't get any of them to work.  I'm sure you'll be keeping an eye on your neighbor whether she knows it or not - she sounds like a tough cookie!  But as OG says, that alarm thingie she could wear would save family and friends from worrying.   Aaack! Horrible dentist bill!  Maybe get one of those helmets U.S. football players wear to protect your investment.

Margobird: Ah yes - sorry - forgot you have restricted eyesight - that would make driving a bit of a challenge.

Djoan: I have two old-fashioned deck chairs; the other week, one of the bits of wood that supports the fabric gave way on one of them and I suddenly dropped about two inches!  Sitting in the garden can be hazardous to your health.  :-)

Heather: Gosh no wonder you're brain dead. A shame you've not been able to spend a lot of time with your son. What's that they say? A daughter's a daughter all of her life but a son's a son 'til he takes a wife" (or joins the RAF?).  Something like that..

OG: Spring bulbs, hot chocolate and carrot cake! Sounds like a winning combo. When you buy maple syrup, where does it come from?

AQ: Another photo reminiscent of Central California's inland hills before the rains come.

Diane:  Our butterflies seem as usual this year.  OH has recovered from the jet lag and now - as I mentioned above - we're making a quick trip to Arizona (Prescott) to drop off stuff for granddaughter. Needless to say (so why am I saying it?) we're taking light clothes and lots of water for the drive!

Hope everyone sleeps well, feels better, and has a good Tuesday.

  • Not sure if either of these will be seen here today, but here goes:

Lynette - Happy Anniversary to you and your OH.

Annette - you are so good to make that journey to Arizona - I wish you safe and comfortable travelling.

    More later after breakfast!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Hi Everyone:   a bit grey here again today.  Lots to read above, you are all so interesting, with always something to make me think about!

Must dash off now as lots to do again today   :-(    but just to say hope that margobird has had a better night and is on the road to recovery with that cough.  Also Safe Journey Annette on that  l o n g  journey, what a distance!

  • Good Morning All. Still windy here but sunny intervals.

    Happy Anniversary Lynette.

Annette, Sorry, but the vision of you with the collapsed sun parasol and the deck chair collapsing did make me laugh.   Have a safe journey to Arizona.

We are off to pick up OH's new specs, which were incorrectly made last time we went, so here's hoping there are no mistakes this time.

  • Good morning all.  Bright, dry and warm so far.  Got gingerbread in the oven – favourite organic black treacle wasn’t available at farm shop, so using molasses instead – will report result!  Making blueberry muffins after – can’t bake together, different oven temps.  Now for some replies.

Brenda – I hope you slept well again, after all the recent stress.  It is so good when our offspring make a good choice of partner – our two SiLs are really good, and both were so helpful when our son was critically ill as a child – and one was just a fiancé at that time.

AQ – sorry about your cold, wet washing!  Thanks for Burra picture – I hope someone will plant some trees on the site.

Diane – good to see a long post from you again – I hope all is well with you and Dad – how is your back now?  About the Gull picture, I was out of the car for the first landscape picture, camera in hand, and OH said there was large brown bird approaching.  I assumed Buzzard and swung the camera onto it.  Then it did a Heron impression, and it wasn’t until it levelled out that I knew it was a Gull.  I just kept snapping, and out of twelve pictures, that was the best, and I then cropped it on the computer.  After seeing it growing all week, we had it cloudy yesterday evening so missed the Full Moon!

Annette – I’m thinking of you and OH driving through all that dry heat – 500 miles in one day – and twice in one week!  And there I was moaning about 100 last week!  Real maple syrup here comes from Canada – I assume it comes in tankers, because it is bottled and distributed in the UK.  I know it’s food miles, but nothing like it on pancakes and blueberries for breakfast!  There is a sort of maple-flavoured product on the market, but must have the real thing!

Lindy and Brenda – good morning.  I hope OH’s specs are right this time, Brenda.

Margo – I hope you had a good night’s sleep and are feeling better – if not, you really ought to take that cough to the doctor (and leave it there! LOL!)

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Good afternoon original goldfinch and I did indeed have a good night.  Cough is much better now down to just a couple of bouts yesterday and today so far, nothing.  If it has been the same I was going to the doctor but really don't like filling up the surgery with something I can get over wihtout having to take anitbiotics.  It is bright and dry here so far but we are promised more gales and heavy rain tonight, so I am hoping that I won't have another bad night because I am worrying about the water coming in.

    Margobird

  • Good afternoon BrendaH hope your OH's specs are correct this time.

    Margobird

  • Annette safe journey to you that is such a long way to drive and in that heat.

    Margobird

  • aquilareen thanks for putting that picture of Burra on, it really could have been taken in Cornwall.  Another thanks too for th Anon.

    Margobird

  • Afternoon all and thanks for all the chat and pics.

Not a good day for migrating, not even to Tescos as it is so windy WSW gusting up to 50mph at the moment. Any ospreys passing through would be blown into the North Sea. Very strange weather for August.

This morning we did manage a shopping mission to Tesco and despite the strong wind and screaming children in the store it was successful.

Happy Anniversary to Jeanette and happy birthday to her OH.

Take care on the long drive to Arizona and back Annette.

AQ : Thanks for the pic of the Burra.

Everyone else, I hope that you have a good day despite the weather.
