Daily Update (LG Nest) Wednesday 18th August

Well, what a funny day we had yesterday.  Comings and goings. EJ in the morning. Odin later on. Two juves screeching away for food which was delivered afternoon and evening.  EJ was seen at breakfast time but not since. Has she left?? We will have to wait to see what today brings.

Thanks once again to all who update us early morning etc sometimes with pics but often with witty comments.

At present the nest is as you can guess empty.  Spotlights have been seen in the area but I failed to snap as was too late to do so. Not sure what it was all about.

Over to the early morning shift - must think about bed as it has gone midnight here.

  • Did we know this ??? Found in FB

Julie Cabral 6:40 am EJ has just delivered a fish to noisy.
6.40 Breakfast has arrived and he has no manners...just snatches it without as much as a "thank-you!" He has now left the nest with it!!

Linda, After Debbie's comment last night, in which she confirmed that EJ hadn't been seen since yesterday's early morning fish delivery, I felt more confident to comment. Maybe Tiger will confirm, but I think I remember one year when EJ was missing for a few days and then returned to the nest before she migrated.

Yes in 2004 EJ went missing on 31st July before the third chick had fledged. She was then possibly sighted on 6th August. Then she turned up on August 11 with a fish and then another one and that was it. She was gone.

One must remember that Henry was excellent at looking after the chicks. He always stayed until the last chick had left. This has not been the case with Odin or OVS or indeed the Eric at Loch of The Lowes.

EJ left for 9 days after Henry kicked the eggs out of the nest.

So although it is very likely that EJ is gone we cannot be certain just yet.

It must be a real act of faith for EJ and Odin to leave rthe chicks after having put so much effort into them. At least tracking has taught us that most of the chicks seem to learn how to fish even if they have not done so before leaving the natal site.

  • Even Deshar learn to fish and he was not  the brightest .

When some one  tracked him down  on migration and took his picture he had a full crop.

It was   Richard who  mentioned it when he saw the  picture.  He was   excited to see that. He was  worried about  Deshar's survival instincts.

  •  Barbara Jean    I was going to say that but    I felt I might get set on by Deshar fans :)

However not all juvenile do learn to fish as we know from Maray a Roy Dennis tracked osprey in 2008. See http://www.roydennis.org/osprey/index.asp?id=115&sid=87

  • Hi, morning all,  Thanks for updates and super pics from Cirrus, Joan, Alicat and I've probably forgotten someone.  At least we are aware that Odin and one chick are still here.

What will today bring!   At present it is quiet and ENS

The mystery of the spotlights last night - they appeared to be ground based - has been spotted by the LG team so maybe they can throw some light  (pardon the puns) on the situation in time.

Thanks, Tiger, for information re migration.

  • Normal 0 false false false

    Absolutely DELIGHTED Alicat   :)

Yes, BarbaraJean – FB postings from early this morning and thanks for info I didn't know about Deshar.

Tiger – very much appreciated your info - and understand your reluctance to mention precious boy Deshar .

  • '' At least we are aware that Odin and one chick are still here.''    Lynette  and

Those on FB saw EJ deliver a fish to a youngster about 06.40  am

  • I am a Deshar fan too. I think his charm was he was such a  clumsy bird but  he did his best  That is all anyone can do is their  best.  It doesn't matter how you measure up to  another if you have truly done your best .

I was watching when he fledged and he  landed on a  branch that was too thin. He did  a  gymnast routine swinging  around on the  branch.  Then he couldn't  figure out how to get airborne again to get back to the nest . It took him ages to finally return  to the nest. :)
