LOCH ARKAIG - AUGUST 2020 TO MARCH 2021. Highlights are Mary GK's and Geemeff's wonderful videos of the 2020 season

August is the month when we've seen the Loch Arkaig ospreys depart on their journey south. We've enjoyed watching them this year - the wonderful parenting skills of Aila and Louis, and the antics of their 3 chicks, Captain, Vera and Doddie.

Mary GK did an absolutely wonderful video summarising the 2020 season. Thank you so much Mary! And here is Geemeff's great compilation, thank you!

2020 last dates:

Doddie JJ6 was last seen at the nest on Saturday 15th August 2020

Aila was last seen on Saturday 22nd August 2020

Captain JJ7 was last seen on Sunday 23rd August 2020

Vera JJ8 was last seen on Saturday 5 September.

An unidentified osprey was seen off camera on Sunday 6 September eating a fish. This could well have been Louis, having arrived and found no Vera around to feed.

Doddie JJ6 was videod and photographed fishing for over a fortnight at Avalon Marshes in Somerset

  • JJ8 on the nest with an abundance of fish and shouting......at who or what? She has known flown taking fish withher but I am happy to have seen somebody AT LAST
Thank you IAN for the info about Aila and JJ7
And thank you GEMEFF for the news about JJ6/Doddie So lovely to get news once they have left and how reassuring to know that he is already a successful fisherman Hope the same will be true of his siblings and all the other young birds on their first migratiion
What an absolute delight this nest has been this season Hope to see a repeat in 2021
  • Thanks, Mary, I've only just seen your comment from yesterday morning (7.40 AM). I've heard of Rothes but was not following then; I'll have a read of your links. I think that Breagha, tagged Loch Garten chick (2013), did have a stop-over in France, both on his migrations south and back north, but I do not think he was photographed with a fish. He must have caught fish when on his first stop-over there; otherwise he would not have survived. It was such a shame when he died in France, having stayed there a bit too long, and presumably came to grief during a storm.

    Kind regards, Ann

  • Wonderbird Louis brings another two fish, number six does a bit of a hokey-cokey on and off the nest several times

Fish number five, yet another mackerel. 18.05.30

Fish number six, headless brown trout, arrives, departs, arrives.. 19.23.07

  • Two more videos, one from Liz B with her long lens - Vera eating fish number five perched in a tree; and four months ago today, an egg was laid that turned into Vera.  Goodnight..

Egg number two (Vera to be) is laid 26 April 2020

  • More JJ6 sightings today: this from Kevin on WT chat

22.33. Good evening. Here is the Doddie news from Shapwick Heath, Somerset. This afternoon, at 17.29 hours, your correspondent spotted, through binoculars, Master D, aka JJ6, perched on a dead tree at Noah's lake. The instant I foccussed the scope, he flew off in that manner and style we have all become familiar with. No photos unfortunately. I did, however get independently confirmed sightings from three other people of perchings numerous, fly bys numerous and THREE SUCCESSFUL FISHING FORAYS TODAY! It would seem his fishing success/failure ratio has been very high in the positive column since his arrival on the 23rd(?). Furthermore, he has company. Another osprey, sex, age and ID indeterminate, has arrived on the lake: they seem at ease with each other. Local knowledge suggests Doddie will remain at least another day to boost calories. Happy, happy day. That's all folks. Night, night. Edit: We were last to leave after brilliant sunset. No more sightings or reports.
  • Sorry for the poor snaps - could this have been a Whitethroat (visited this evening)?

  • OMG PINE MARTEN on the nest!

Possibly the strong winds on 25 August have brought down a branch they can use as in 2018. Although we don't want them on the nest (now is as good a time as any), they are marvellous creatures in their own right. I wonder if their scent will encourage JJ8 to get on her bike!! Ian
