LOCH ARKAIG - The Woodland Trust - May 2020

Link to April thread

Louis arrived on the 5th April and Aila a day later. They were quickly into the old routine of making the nest cosy, stickifying, catching and eating fish, and mating of course. Three eggs were laid ON THE SAME DATES as last year - 23rd, 26th and 29th April. Last year's eggs hatched on 1 and 4 June, although egg 2 failed during hatching and was removed from the nest on 7 June. Let's hope for a healthy trio this year, although we don't want a repeat of snow on 13 May.

Helen, I have not seen any posts about this, so thanks for the information. If only I used facebook! Ian

Can you get Youtube? That's what i watch the livestream on.  It  was an information flash from the introduction of this morning's dawn chorus livestream.  Good luck!

  • 19.38, Aila comes back with most of the fish. They are both watchful, at 19.40 Louis looks like he has gone to chase something else away. At 19.40.09 to 19.40.12 you can see Louis chasing the other bird. Aila leaves the fish on the nest to lay on the eggs, Louis comes back but is off chasing again at 19.41, although he is back quickly and then off again more times. 19.54, Louis returns, takes the fish and flies. Thanks Helen, I will try to remember to watch it on youtube. Ian

  • 20.06, Louis is back with the fish, they both continue to look alert, Aila is still on the eggs. Ian

  • 20.19, Aila takes the fish & flies, leaving Louis with the eggs. Ian
  • 20.45, Louis is calling. Maybe he wants what's left of the fish or maybe he is bored with sitting on the eggs and wants to get to his perch for the night :) Ian

  • 20.50, Aila comes back with no fish. 20.51, with a shoulder charge she manages to muscle the still calling Louis off the eggs. Louis finds a morsel of fish on the nest and glides gracefully down to his perch with it in his beak. Let's hope Aila doesn't suffer an owl strike tonight. Ian

  • 21.01, Louis is back still calling, he must be really disgruntled at not getting to finish the fish or possibly warning someone else off! 21.06, Louis flies off, but not chasing I don't think. Ian

  • Thanks Ian for all your detailed posts today (others too).

Louis darts off at 18.58 after another bird (maybe a corvid) leaving Aila on the nest starting on the fish. Louis gets pretty close to whatever he is chasing, especially at 18.58.35 to 18.58.38.

Sod's law, that's right on the cusp of two 6-hour downloads, one ended @ 18:58:29 and it picked up again @ 19:00:14 - so it takes just over one-and-a-half minutes to process and save a 6-hour clip and start a new one.

Fine fish - Aila flew off with it in her talon, as instructed by IAN ;)

Later Louis came back for the generous leftover, which had been left at the back of the nest:

    Watchful:

Aila got up and took the fish from unprotesting Louis, and flew in the recommended manner.  She didn't bring any back, that's when Louis found a scrap to take away:

Louis last seen when he popped back tweeting softly just after 21:00 for a few minutes.  (I see he has a red patch under his chin, hopefully just fish blood.)

Aila settling down at 23:25 after a flyabout.

I haven't seen any hits up to 01:00 but she's been very alert and up a few times in readiness:
