Weekly Chat, Sunday July 25, 2010

Hi all:  First off, con't miss the last page of last week's chat for lovely photo of Alan's hibiscus and OG's very informative shots of the nest at LG, showing the perch under the nest where chick #1 likes to sit.

OG. Assume plumber on the list for next week.  So Boat of Garten actually has something to do with a real boat!  I thought it was some obscure Scottish vernacular-ish term that had nothing to do with a boat.  There was a nature program here last week about "preparing" an environment for some species that are living in an area that is expected to be threatened by higher ocean levels in the coming years. As with the Lapwings, the change has to be made gradually.

Cirrus.  A 12-mile hike! I probably burned a couple of hundred calories just thinking about it.

Was in the garden all day - as I type have the soaker hose going on the camellias, which I fed and which need deep watering about twice in the summer; they're putting out buds now.  Also fed the roses and plumeria. Found a volunteer duranta repens growing in one of the plumeria pots - I thought it was familiar but only recognized it today.    Sun came out around 11 and lovely cool evening now.

Good morning. Another chilly morn, min 4.4 C, currently 5.7 C here at West Beach. City is a few degrees warmer. No wonder we had a flurry a short time ago with Himself rushing to front door to feed his magpies and me out the back with the ducks. They looked like they hadn’t eaten for a week. Wonderful poem Lindybird - I had to laugh picturing Diane’s menagerie. Great pics of flowers, OG & Lindy. Gladioli have been one of my favourites since I grew them as a child. Thank you Diane for recipe. I have translated ingredients - all purpose flour is plain flour and baking soda is carb soda Downunder. Great pic of cardinal bird - I want one in my backyard. I’m jealous of Wattle - not that there is anything stopping me from driving down south to Noarlunga to see ospreys - well apart from time. Apparently there are two on Torrens Island near Port Adelaide also. Busy morn ahead - coffee with 2 friends, one I haven’t seen all year. It may be a looooooong natter!!!!

  • From my collection (most are by that famous Anon). I'm very fond of the last ;-)

I was gratified to be able to answer promptly, and I did. I said I didn't know. (Mark Twain)

Accomplishing the impossible only means the boss will add it to your regular duties.

The trouble with doing something right the first time is that nobody appreciates how difficult it was.

Aim low. Reach your goals. Avoid disappointment.

  • Hi everyone: Just in for a quick read and to admire various pix and laugh at various jokes, verse, sayings, etc.!!  Sun only just came out here - at 4:15 p.m.!!!  Hanging out with daughter so will probably not post much until tomorrow afternoon.  Take care all.

  • Good morning all.

AQ Where do you find all these sayings?  I like 'accomplish the impossible.... Think thta happened me often in my working life!

Going to the doc. shortly as I've been 'hirpling' (limping, for the Sassanachs and others!) for about 3 weeks with what I hope is not arthritis in a hip joint.  Oh the joys of getting old!

OG Your garden must be beautiful and the pics are lovely.  I managed to kill off my potted fuchsias by forgetting to water them enough during our prolonged dry spell.  They're wet enough now! Weatherman says if we don't have 10 hours sunshine between now and Saturday night, it will be the dullest July on record - and it's often not a great month.

  • Morning, All:  Dull skies here again today, and lots more rain forecast. Wish I could send some of  it South to those of you who have thirsty gardens.

OH & I both feeling much better after our strange infection.  I sat down last night to watch the recording I'd made of 'Wild Wales'  & promptly went to sleep on the sofa!  Now we both seem to have caught up with ourselves & are off on normal running mode again.

Here is another pic of the Flower Show:

---one of the Show Gardens - couldn't get all of it in as had to elbow my way to the front to get just the middle of the garden.  This one as you can see, was very vibrant, although I didn't like the plastic white panels you can see; it would have been much nicer if done in stonework.

(Thanks to OG for putting me right on the plant names, I'm not great on those)

  • Lindy, I'm sooo honored! My own poem -- and a wonderful one at that!!! I had a BIG laugh reading it. You're so talented!

Oh, and I think the wildlife here on the land would probably agree with the poem. A small flock of Canada Geese landed on the lawn once, and the regular birdfolk weren't at all happy with the invasion. LOL

    Much appreciate the verse!

  • By the way, anyone reading this thread in the U.S. midwest? The little kitty in the post above is named Maggie, and she's looking for a forever home. You can adopt her at the Indianapolis Animal Care and Control. (My best friend takes the photos for the shelter.)

  • Thanks, Diane -  glad you liked it & hope it made you laugh.

---you can just box up the kitty & send her over here right away- she's just gorgeous!

  • Morning all ... cloudy and breezy here, but not cold. The promised rain didn't materialise during the night, so have had to water the tubs and pots. They promised us rain today but seem to have changed their minds this morning. The kitchen seems to be progressing well ... they started at 8.30 a.m. and didn't finish until 6.30 p.m. ... said they wanted to get on while the weather was fine and do the sawing etc outside. They are very clean and tidy workers and ever so polite .... makes a lovely change! They said if all goes smoothly they might get finished on Thursday ... fingers crossed.

Lindybird - I loved your poem for Diane ... you are a very talented lady! ... and another lovely photograph ... I don't care for the white either.

AQ - I like your sayings, particularly the last one ... I must remember to do that!

patriciat - I hope your 'hirpling' doesn't turn out to be serious ... that word reminded me of my granny as she used that term.

Heron - glad you had a good trip and looking forward to seeing some photos

    Take care

  • Morning all , cloudy here at the moment with a few light showers. We need much more rain for the grass as it is extremely brown. I was going to take a trip to Rutland Water this morning but the weather forecast is not great so I have decided to leave it for another day. Lady P is off to her sisters for the day. Hamish has now fully recovered from his tummy upset and is back to his normal tail wagging self.

Paul : Looking forward to seeing your photos and glad you had a good time at LG and LOTL.

Linda : Another great poem. I'm sure you could make a fortune writing poems about various politicians and celebrities I could mention.

AQ : It's hard to think of Australia with such low temperatures and tanks for the sayings.....so true.

patriciat : I hope your 'hirpling' gets better soon.

Everyone else thanks for all the chat, pics, links, poems, sayings etc.
