MANTON BAY – MAY 2019

Continued from April 2019

The season so far:

Maya arrived back 14 March and Blue 33(11) on 23 March.  They are currently incubating 4 eggs laid 2, 5, 8 and 11 April with the first expected to hatch around 9 May

  • I recall the incident Richard - very upsetting.     The eldest chicks should be fine, also #3 but #4 is still very small and only 11 days old.

I think it is #4 at the back left and I see it moving its head however I wish it would get up

Edit:   Nice to see #4 move for it has now moved across and snuggled into its siblings.   Not like it to miss out on a feed!

  • Feed underway - all 4 chicks lined up.

    #4 getting a bit

Cam still freezing and going down so impossible to follow feed!

The odd screen appears!   #4 did have its head down when one of the eldest was being fed and now that is has finished, I see #4 getting fish.

Going to log off now and hopefully cam sorted out when I look back later.   BFN

  • KAREN, I was relieved to see you commenting about the freezing and having to keep refreshing (but you can't as often as needed) - you can understand that my cams just stay frozen because I'm doing other things too and only go thru the footage in retrospect... hopeless Cry

However, I did find this @ 09:35 - I wonder who the focus of the snap is? ;)

  • I've no idea SCYLLA for I was out. But that is #4 for I see the other three at the left side of the nest. It looks like #4 has just wakened up and having a good yawn and a stretch LOL

And as for the cam, we can clearly see that it is impossible for you to record Scylla - as you say "hopeless".

And talking of cams ...... I've no top cam at all. Hopefully this is not a serious issue but I know Mike (thanks Mike) has let them know about the issue and they were supposed to have been working on it. Hopefully it is back up soon. BBL
  • 16:40 I've got a pic on the top cam but is freezing and buffering

  • FISH

Saw 33 deliver this on the WA and the top cam came up.  Cams are out of sync for then 33 arrived with it.  Captured this and then the cam went down and all I have once more is a black screen.

On the WA cam, I saw 33 fly off.  Maya is covering the chicks not feeding.

Surprise ....  cam up and I see 33 has left the fish.

But for whatever reason, Maya is not feeding and doing her best to shield the chicks from the elements

  • A feed going on and a very nasty bullying, not sure whether it was No 3 on the receiving end.
  • Maya now up and started feeding

Some aggression from eldest chick on #3   -   it has its head down now and #4 also stays down and at the back.

    #1 and #2  fed first

  • #4 had joined the feed and eldest chick turned on it ;-(

    #3 and #4 in submission

Maya has now stopped feed and covering the chicks

Not a good feed for the youngsters.   Hopefully weather improves and they get something later for there is plenty fish on the nest

  • Maya is up and grabs the fish to give the chicks another feed

Eldest up first and #4 is at the front too with an elder chick behind it.   #4 gets some fish

now all the chicks are lined up and #4 turns away keeping to the back (most likely a wise move as it is out of trouble)

18:20 ...  Maya starts to clean up despite the chicks wanting more and she covers them

#1, #2 and #3 got a reasonable amount of fish.   #4 just got 1 or 2 pieces at the start.    Hopefully the rain passes quickly and if not, that Maya can keep feeding them at intervals but at least the young chick has had fish today.
