Weekly Chat, Sunday July 17, 2010

Hi all: Just a heads up - we're getting Server Error messages but posts are making it onto the thread. Just means you have to keep reloading the page.  Check out last few posts of previous Weekly Chat to find out what kind of visitors TerryM had at her bird feeder yesterday. I blathered a bit but nothing to miss the ospreys for; pretty quiet in fact with some of the regulars off on vacation.

  • Good morning Alan and lovely picture of Bassenthwaite Lake, looks as though it was not raining when that was taken.

  • Good morning Lincybird do you think you could send some of your rain down our way.  They keep promising rain but as yet it has not happened and the garden really does need a good downpour now.

Hope dentist visit goes OK and you don't have to part with a lot of cash.

Off to see the Pet Shop Boys tonight so will be dancing the night away again.  Meal in one of our favourite Italian restuarants first so no cooking for me today.

  • Hello auntie sorry your vacation is over and how quickly that went for you.  Hope your Mum is still progressing well.

  • Lots to read these past couple of days.  Poor Brenda - what an expensive phone call that was. These things can't be forseen (perhaps its just as well).  Thanks to Alan for another beautiful Lake picture. Just love that area.    patriciat:   Wittering on?? whatever do you mean?  My posts are twice the size I'm sure! I lay claim to being biggest witterer !  Interesting about the snake, look forward to your pic.

margobird:   I was just so pleased that you witnessed Titch's fledge after missing the others. You have been watching such a lot from the very beginning of this season, and it seemed only fair that you should see at least one of them   ; - )

We did enjoy our trip to Martin Mere, it's a Wetland Centre with special emphasis on 'Wet' as they are all water birds. Well laid out and with areas to encompass displays of birds from the different continents on one side, and lots of large and comfortable Hides to watch the birds on the Mere itself & areas around it.  Also its famous for the Swans which arrive in winter, from the North.

First thing we saw were the Flamingoes:

-- I think these were Greater Flamingoes as we saw some later which were pinker, but those above had a shed like building where they were fed, and it was easier to get nearer to them:

--they were so elegant!   We also saw lots and I mean Lots of ducks & geese, which I adore so took many many pics so will only show those most interesting. These were just wandering about loose, so not sure of their names..

  • Lindybird glad you enjoyed your day at Martin Mere.  Did Springwatch or Autumnwatch come from there once.  Lovely photos too.

  • Another Irish joke courtesy of Lady P:

Paddy is painting his front room and his wife walks in and cant believe Paddy is doing so well. To her surprise he has worked so hard the sweat is dripping off him. She asks him " Why on earth are you wearing a leather jacket and a parka?". He says "It says on the tin for best results put on two coats!"

  • Morning all: Just remember have dentist appointment for cleaning this morning - ugh - should've changed it last week since we're so busy.

Alan: Thought you were joking in one of your posts about hearing the crowds cheer at LG when Titch fledged; then saw other responses, played it again (with the sound up - find that helps!) and it was really great to hear the cheers!  :-)   Another pretty photo of the Lake District - thank you!

Patriciat:  Oh so it's true that there are - were? - no snakes in Ireland? Or am I being naive (raised by very Catholic Irish Mum so heard lots of tales about saints and was never quite sure....).  :-)    Did the snake need to be rescued?  Interesting.

Lindybird:  Lovely shots!  Flamingoes are like penguins a bit in that they're intriguing to watch. I was mentioning the other night a nature program on the Andes which included footage of about 100 bright pink flamingos apparently in some kind of mating mode, "jogging" down a road in a very tight little group, wing to wing,  Almost bizarre, but the best bit was tthat he film folks had tossed in some lively Andean music and it looked like they were all on their way to a dance and couldn't wait to get there!

Speaking of which, Margobird; glad you did your ironing with no calamities on the sparkly bits. Knock 'em dead kid!

OK, must hose myself down before the dentist; then off on other stuff. Back later.

  • Annette Yes, it's true, at least that there are no snakes in Ireland (except in zoos or private collections.  I can't vouch for St Patrick banishing them, though!  Yes, it did need rescuing as it almost certainly wouldn't find our climate pleasant.  We suspect some charming person dumped it.  It's in good hands now. I'll try to download the pic from my phone.

Alan Very funny! (I think we write those jokes ourselves - well, you have to be prepared to laugh at yourself, don't you?

  • Just to say before signing off for the night - Yes, Annette  - it was me who had the Extravagant Friend.  Have know each other for years & years  & she is great fun, but she does go overboard in the shops!  Of course, she was a Career Woman when I was at home being an Earth mother when our children were young, so she held down a good job & now has a nice pension also. So she can afford to indulge herself whilst I have to watch the pennies quite often.  It doesn't stop us having good times & agreeing to differ on some things: that's what a Good Friend is all about, don't you think?  Have supported each other through all kinds of health dramas & such, so that friendship means so much to both of us. She laughs at me for my 'economies' & I laugh at her for her extravagances!

Off to watch TV with OH now & eat the last of the soft fruit from the allotment.
