Weekly Chat, Sunday July 17, 2010

Hi all: Just a heads up - we're getting Server Error messages but posts are making it onto the thread. Just means you have to keep reloading the page.  Check out last few posts of previous Weekly Chat to find out what kind of visitors TerryM had at her bird feeder yesterday. I blathered a bit but nothing to miss the ospreys for; pretty quiet in fact with some of the regulars off on vacation.

  • Thanks Auntie for that link. Looks like a really good one to watch.

  • Thanks to Diane  for reminder about Trucker Steve: have been watching for a few mins. but its very addictive & I have things to do!

Here is another go at the Grey Crowned Cranes pic:

----The one with the pair on it won't work, so here is one from through the fence of a single bird- he was very haughty! and royal as befits a crowned prince!

    - this is a cute duck from one of the ponds. A South Georgian Pintail according to my guidebook.

    Like the pics Lindybird.

  • Thanks, margobird -  I'm just relieved when one comes out, these days!  I took 2 cameras on my trip as my newer digital one just won't let me put them on here.  So for a lot of the pictures, I duplicated them by taking two pics!   Someone suggested I should trim them to make them less info to transfer, but I have no idea how to change them other than to 'turn' the ones which you take lengthways when you are snapping away. Here is another pic:

--  I think it's a Cuban Whistling Duck - we saw some which made a fascinating whistling sound instead of the usual quack!

  • Hello all - Haven't been able to watch much today so thanks for all the info and pics.

OG - Loved the pic of Odin. Ha! I cooked the second gingerbread on 175 in error, instead of 160 (fan) as you prescribed. It was a bit crusty on the top but my ever loyal (or is he just greedy?!) OH said 'I quite like the crusty bits!'. Bless :-))

<Margobird - Its great that your hearing is so much helped, my next door neighbour has arrived home this afternoon with hearing aids so I'm hoping that she will find the transition as easy as you have done!

Annette - When is OH due back? Like the idea of wine and tasty food that you don't have to cook.

Everyone - Many thanks for your good wishes re stepdaughter and SiL. Stepdaughter remains in hospital but the good news is that emergency treatment for oesophageal bleeding has been effective. Her other problems seem to be a reaction to a drug that was prescribed. I will pass on your supportive messages to SiL when he retirns next week. He is only home for two weeks R and R, then back to Afghan. for six weeks or so.

  • Lindybird what a cute duck and fancy being a whistling duck and not a quacking duck.  Great pic anyway.

  • Hello All, this is a test - I haven't received any mail since Sunday.  I itially thought the server was down, but decided to check the forum, so it can't be that.  Any suggestions.?

  • Good evnign Heather B glad to hear some good news about your stepdaughter.  My best wishes to your SIL too and tell him how proud we all are of our military.

Hope your neighbour copes with her hearing aids and gets the same pleasure I do of being able to hear properly.

  • Heather -   Good news re your stepdaughter.  At least your  s. in law will be able to enjoy the family for a couple of weeks break.

Cathie:   Don't know the answer, unless you have inadvertently clicked on the button that stops all emails.  I did this but deliberately, as I don't want any!

Alan:    Nice pic of the Water Rail - I've never seen one except on TV.

AQ:   I found the large type a couple of times, but had to work out how I'd done it!  Quite often I have leaned over the keyboard to squint at the screen and have pressed several keys with my boobs!!!!!  (female disadvantage!) - all sorts of interesting things happen on screen when I do that!  Well done with the knitting - you really do deserve that halo, you know   ;-))

Annette:  Give Lightening a cuddle for me - I really miss having a cat, we always had one before and the last 5 years have been the longest in my life without one.

Must go clear up the kitchen.

  • Lots of interesting things to see and read – so thanks for all photos and posts since last Friday.  Excuse me if I only pick out a few to mention – just too many for replies to all!

AQ – Have found the wedding dates – thanks for trying to save the answer for me!  I agree about asterisks and blanks instead of words – always make me try to guess the word, even though I don’t really want to know.  So good that you and Wattle met up – I was so pleased when we had lunch with Dibnlib earlier – yes, we are all real people!

Lindybird – like the Poppies through the garden seat – we have Ferns through the deck and Mallows between paving slabs!!  Loved your ID poem.  Have a great day at Tatton tomorrow!

Alan – sorry the Lakes were so wet (if you see what I mean!).  Nice photos from your hols.  Especially Bassenthwaite from Dodd Wood – once stayed there in caravan and walked in the wooded area  (walking days are over, apart from slow staggering around, but I still walk miles in dreams).

Diane – I know your Dad is frail anyway, but were you saying [“Lots of people are ill here (including my Dad)”], he now has a cold/flu/allergic reaction?  I do hope he’ll be as well as possible soon.  Loved your friends Emu picture!!

Terry – Eccleston was just t’other side of Chorley from us and we used to go to Martin Mere too.

Annette – I didn’t hear “chunnering” until we moved to northern England – and in Lancashire “mythering” was used for whinging – especially when applied to children – either a noun as “stop your mythering” or a transitive verb “stop mythering me”!  I too get lost for hours following etymology and meanings round in circles whenever I open a dictionary – used to read encyclopaedias and dictionaries when I was young – just because they were there.  So pleased you got the upgrade you wanted for your husband’s trip.

Auntie – your holiday seems to have passed by so fast – very pleased you managed to visit the Ospreys a second time.

Patriciat – I guess Corn Snake was a released ex-pet.  Thrilled to read that “your” Red Kites have bred successfully!

HeatherB – pleased you enjoyed Brittany, despite not being able to do all you wanted there.  So sorry your stepdaughter’s liver is causing problems after a good year – I do hope she can be helped.  I sometimes cook the Gingerbread at a higher temp when it is in the oven with something else, so mine varies in texture too.

This was supposed to be short, but I’ve been rabbiting (wittering) on!  Will have to tell you a bit about the trip in a different post.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
