Weekly Chat, Sunday July 17, 2010

Hi all: Just a heads up - we're getting Server Error messages but posts are making it onto the thread. Just means you have to keep reloading the page.  Check out last few posts of previous Weekly Chat to find out what kind of visitors TerryM had at her bird feeder yesterday. I blathered a bit but nothing to miss the ospreys for; pretty quiet in fact with some of the regulars off on vacation.

  • '' one of those where one could see streaks of lightning running along the ground. ''    Yikes AQ does that happen very often in Oz ??   How could one hope to escape one of those if  out walking in a storm.

Diane  so observant of you!  Go to top of the class . Why didn't we realise that. :) so slow off the mark.

Hello to you all by the way? I don't often post on this thread but it makes great readiing .

  • Morning, All.  Sounds like we are having problems again with Server messages etc.  aaagh. Will find out when I try to post this I suppose.

Drizzly this morning, and supposed to be wet on & off all day - Husband has just left to go play Golf so has taken all the wet weather gear with him.

Here is a pretty pic to cheer us up:

-- some of last years poppies have set themselves & are coming up through the paving.  Also now appearing through the bench itself so we've not been sitting on it for a while!

    Have a Good Sunday, All.

ps:   Nice to see you on here, Cirrus!

  • Well, as we are now into another day of "which one is it?" here are a few lines to clarify matters.....

        I  D

Is it you, or is it me?

We all just look the same, you see -

With dappled wings and heads so brave

It doesn't matter if you "Save"

For every time you think we're "sorted"

    Another theory is reported!

--When we fly off into the blue

To leave LG - you'll still say

    "Who??"

  • Morning all,

Back from The Lakes now and just catching up with all that has been happening.

Unfortunately as the weather was so bad most of the time, I did not manage to see the ospreys "live" at the Dodd Wood viewing points but did manage to see them on the big screen at the Whinlatter Visitor Centre with their sattelite transmitters on. Also watched the DVD of the ringing process and Roy Dennis fitting the transmitters. One of the juveniles was really fiesty and tried to take chunks out of Roys hand. I was not able to find out how the tracking process was going to be reported  as although they had a grant for the transmitters the money for the tracking was still being collected.

It was a shame that they did not manage the ring and bling at LG but probably the right decision in the circumstances.

Lots to catch up on. Think I will skip some of it as there is so much.

  • DIANE  no dillon hasn't been in a canoe yet. OH on hols as from tomorrow and we plan to take another canoe trip when we return from our few days away. On buying a canoe we decided we may not be able to get a canoe on the roof bars (my fault I am not at all stong )' but we have discovered there is a light weight canoe on the market ( a lot more expensive tah the standard ) we can source one from Perth and thought we might go down and have a look at it before we commit.

AUNTIE Glad to hear the positive news of your Mum, I do hope she continues with the improvement

  • Good morning all and welcome back Alan and what a shame about the weather.

We went to see a show called Striclty Tap Dancing and enjoyed it very much.  Always wanted to learn to tap as a youngster along with learning to play the piano and to go horse riding.  Didn't do any of these things as money was quite tight for my Mum and Dad and other things were much more important.  Unfortunately a bit long in the tooth now to learn any of these things but I quite understood the situation for my parent.

Thanks for all the interesting posts and the pic Lindybird.

Off to prepare some lunch now as OH has been at work this morning but at least it has given me time to catch up.

  • Morning all!  The earth is tilting on its axis yet again. We have bamboo shades that hang from the eaves of our house and in the summer we let them down because the sun is blinding as it comes up over the trees. Today I noticed that it has snuck around to the south, which means it's time to adjust the shades....  Hot here yesterday and today with ceiling fans going in each room starting early in the morning and the attic fan going all day.  But lovely and cool at night.

Lindybird: Very funny poem!  I bet you could get away with putting that on the Daily Update page!!  Hee-hee. And so true.   Do you have cushions for that bench? I know I'd need them.  Our landscape lady left a catalog with us on Friday that has some marvellous stuff in it I never knew existed!! Solar hummingbird lights, fountains, etc., and some wonderful swings, benches, gliders,

Alan: Welcome back; we were thinking about your weather prospects last week.  So, feisty bird tried to take a bit out of Roy?  Now the decision to pass on the ring and bling makes even more sense.  But as you'll see on the Daily Update thread, has left many of us without valuable hints for ID purposes.  Did  Hamish have good weather?  :-)

Margobird: I know what you mean about riding lessons. I always wanted to learn to ride and things were tight in our family too, which is why I made sure my daughter learned.  I did have piano lessons and have a piano now; started taking lessons again after I retired 5 years ago but then we moved up here and I haven't picked them up again. Now wondering how much I want to....  You're never too old to learn the piano; in fact, learning new skills like that (as opposed to doing crosswords) are known to keep the brain in good running condition.   I took a couple of ballet classes but really felt like a giant lump in a tuttu and didn't stick with them!

off to start the day. take care all.  Diane: Hope you don't get lightning running past your front door today.

  • Sorry folks.Just realized I got the date wrong on the thread. When I can't remember, I click on the computer clock and, of course, since we're 8 hours behind the UK, I get "today's" date in SoCal and sometimes forget to jump forward.

Don't worry about that, Annette:  some of us who have Lost the Plot are on yesterday anyway!!  Glad you had a nice meal out, or at least good company. Have had times when the talk & laughter has far exceeded the standard of the food, but made up for it.  Aged Auntie gave the Dog a huge digestive biscuit, and before I could say anything, he took it, very nicely without snatching, but put his mouth around the whole thing and it was gone in a flash with just a gulp! - didn't even drip or drop any crumbs onto the kitchen floor.... Bought the bench a few years ago in a Garden Centre Sale & am still looking for the right sized cushion for it, meanwhile we put two ordinary ones on it when we lounge.

Welcome back to Alan -  hope the weather didn't spoil it too much for you on your break.  My son told me recently that the Whinlatter Centre has been modernised and is very good now.

Heron:   Don't feel you have to apologise for that person, who has nothing whatever to do with anything wonderfully Scottish.

TerryM:   That sounds like one busy busy feeder - do tell us if you are putting anything unusual out to attract all these birds.

margobird:  Pleased you had a good time at the Show - its sounds good.  I did Tap Dancing lessons only a few years ago, and we had such a good laugh whilst trying to master the steps!  Still have my tap shoes in the cupboard but don't know if they will ever be used again. Also went to Line Dancing classes and that was fun, too. - hard on the memory as we did increasingly complex routines & had to remember what came next.

Did have a lot of fun with the 'If you don't Succeed List"  from AQ - your lists are always good.

Went for walk into the Town in the absence of OH (golfing) and was very lucky to dodge the showers as it rained hard within minutes of my return.  Have just recorded the latest Wild Wales programme to watch later. The 1st one was very good indeed, recommend them.

Off to eat our raspberries again now, with sugar on...  Bye

  • We were staying on a farm that had a Shetland pony stud. Here is a pic of one of the ponies:
