We awoke yesterday to a very soggy EJ on the nest (MaryGKs pic), but thank goodness she still had her breakfish behind her, because she never got any fish. Not that GJ didn't have one when he visited, twice, but she seemed not interested. Was it too small? Meager leftovers? Did she later realize she better get one before having to wait another 24 hours for the next one? Probably not. But you never know with ospreys.
GJ, for his part, was the masterful defender of the nest, arriving to stand along EJ repelling a hopeful skydancer (scylla's vid). He also spent some time on the eggs, looking proud after he dragged a stick over EJ to get her to leave. We hope he will find inspiration for fishing out another big one today, given yesterday was a difficult fishing day due to rain and wind. Clare Bailey said: Question...is it just me seeing things...or are EJ's feathers less rain repellent than some other osprey's? I have noticed Aila's and Louis' feathers seems to always hold and repel rain as droplets which run off, rather than soaking into the feathers. Whereas EJ's feathers never seem to repel rain in droplets, as I have seen, rather just becoming what appears soaking wet. Could it be to do with age, or just the condition of the feathers?

[/quote]the oils which waterproof EJ come from preengland and preening. Given her lack of opportunity to go off and preen it will affect the quality of her feather waterproofing which is vitally important as she sits day in day out in rain.. With this new male I have no issues with the number if fish he is supplying as she is getting plenty to eat but I do have huge concerns about him taking a share of incubating to allow EJ to look after herself. I do not think this male is a good pairing and he lacks in the attentive department which is very sad. Time and chick arrival will tell one way or another.
When EJ needs to shelter eggs and chicks from rain she needs to be waterproof but even more so when she fishes again.
EJ certainly settled on a lovely looking bird:
Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

The next great event was the fish tailfin :-/
IMAGICAT
Good morning my fellow Ospreyholics
Thanks for all the updates, pictures etc. Nice to catch up with events. Saw this mornings fish tail delivery. Makes me think the fish was very small in the first place because in recent times George has been bringing in much larger offerings. Hopefully he can catch much bigger fish today.
Seems to be windy at LG just now, and EJ is looking quite windswept and interesting. Then again she always looks Phenomenal. No matter what the weather.
Warning! This post contains atrocious spelling, and terrible grammar. Approach with extreme edginess.
She has gone quiet. I'll see you all later.
11.20 a gusty day, EJ is preening, two feathers are caught in the long grass, one white fluffy one, and a brown one, looking more like a dead leaf

It sounds as tho it is getting very gusty now, but still the feathers cling on. A downy feather caught on her beak
