Daily Update ~Loch Garten Nest~Tuesday 24 April 2018

Yesterday's Daily Update saw 18 pages of quite frankly Ospreytastic input. The young male who EJ has taken to, impressed us with two well sized fish deliveries. As we come into a new day, EJ is on her eggs but she has a slightly restless look. Perhaps we may see a third egg soon.

Hello Moffer, and everybody else who's around. Re the egg laying:- I've been suspicious right from the start about the 1st egg, which EJ didn't attempt to incubate at all, for whatever reason. The 2nd egg - I wonder if that was the result of the very brief mating with the first male that came along, whom she very briefly accepted. Now that she has had repeated matings with Junior, maybe she will lay another fresh clutch, all Juniors, and unrelated to egg#2,in another few days. Just wondering.....

That is a very interesting theory and I can see the logic in the argument completely. What concerns me, if it proves to be correct, is that often the 'quality' e.g. egg thickness of the second clutch has often been shown to be inferior to the quality of the first clutch, resulting in poor hatching rates of the eggs and also survival of any young that hatch from second clutches. If the second clutch is 3 and the first clutch has stopped at 2 and all 5 hatch then I would not want to be in Junior's shoes as provider for mother and chicks.

Some people think Ospreys are a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that.

    17.11 Nice big headless FISH

    What a boy....!!!
On second thoughts, I think that boy is fast becoming a man, a man many a good female would quite like to have around their nest.

Keep it up Junior....your admirer count is growing.

(EDIT: Interesting observation.. Between the fly-away after the clump delivery (15-57 BST), and the fish arriving (17-11 BST) was 65 minutes if you believe the recorded times in this thread ( or 56 mins if you believe the roll back times in Youtube stream).
I wonder where that fish was caught?)

:-) I was teasing about Sauchiehall Street. I have very fond memories of days at Lochwinnoch, particularly watching a male harrier, which always seemed to appear at the same time as me.

Was that on sunny days CRinger?

(By his own admission......CRinger is a male harrier in disguise, who undressed in Lochwinnoch...in order to catch up with his shadow)

Difficult to type when laughing so much.

Lochwinnoch can sometimes be a 'quiet' reserve and I used to visit 2 or 3 times a week and I promise that more often than not I had only been there under an hour when a male harrier appeared. It became a standing joke with the staff to keep their eyes firmly peeled for this harrier when I was there. And no, the weather had no influence on the harrier's appearance. And no, I was not under any influence myself during my visits. The male harrier was there, it was real and displayed for all to see.

    Still laughing.

  • When Junior first became the resident male, I thought he would attempt to kick the then one egg out. I seem to recall reading of EJ mating with a male while she was away from the nest for a couple of days. I wonder if there is any possibility that male could have been Junior? It's interesting how willingly he has taken to those eggs. Could they actually be his?

  • A very interesting thought Heron.  I guess that's what is making this season, as sad as it might be, so fascinating. Particularly as EJ has such a reputation!!  Blue XD in particular springs to mind, but CRinger would probably think of OVS.  She could well have been 'enjoying' herself whilst waiting for Odin to return...??

A change in dynasty is always difficult to accept:  what about 33 at MB when he kicked out dear Wonky Wing?  They moved on and are both doing very well, and still remain in our hearts.

  • That's my boy, a big headless fish for the lady. My, is she so excited when that fish arrives, she's grabs it before he is properly settled, and away, and then chirps from where she is eating it as if to tell him, STAY on these eggs now until I get back. What a great pair they are turning out to be, he is trying so hard to impress EJ, and us and I thinks he is doing just that.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
