DAILY UPDATE ~ Loch Garten nest ~ Sunday, 25 March 2018

One week from Easter Sunday, and all of us are anxiously awaiting EJ finding a lucky guy that lives up to her (and our) standards. At least, we now have the cam back, though we have not seen EJ since the cam has been back up. We can only trust she is nearby the nest (perhaps on the branch below) keeping intruders and curious pine martens at bay. At present a light wind ruffles the grasses on the nest. © RSPB - Loch Garten and Carnyx Wild

  • Sorry, I have digressed from the DU.  When we start to have more action I think we must stick by the rules and report on action, rather than chat!  That belongs on the osprey chat thread!!

  • COUNTRYFILE IS INCLUDING A PIECE ON PINE MARTEN... if anyone's interested :)

Sheila, no apologies needed. We have all done it. But your comment is a great reminder to try to stick to once the action ramps up. It really does help make the DU Summary easier to manage.

  • Sheila, do you know what became of CF4 & 5?

That bears highlighting in a neutral situation, Sheila, because people can think you're criticising them if you 'advise' them to ask general osprey questions on Osprey Chat - and I know only too well how hurt one can feel.

Please note this if it's happened to you :)

  • Hi my fellow Ospreyholics

So happy the webcam wasn't down for too long. A massive thanks to everyone in getting it fixed. Thanks also for all the quite frankly Ospreytastic pictures of EJ The Phenomenal. There is never too much. Empty nest just now. 19.13.

Warning!  This post contains atrocious spelling, and terrible grammar.  Approach with extreme edginess.

I am sure others will chip in if I get it wrong - as I am notoriously likely to do!

Breagha (CF4(13) m migrated thru France and settled in a small area of Senegal near or on the Casamance River,  May 2015 he was happily there and moved north for his first migration.  He returned to Vienne in France in June 2015 where he had spent some time on his southward migration in 2013 paralleling this route before settling on the River Loire before heading to the River Gironde (where Rothes spent a lot of his/her time).  Sue C went in search of him, at Chinon, but she missed him by a few hours!  He returned to the Gironde and the Loire.  10 September is was noted there had been no further update.  On 25 Sept Jess reported that his tracker was no longer sending data.  His last recorded location was at 13.00 GMT on 14 September in a wooded area 2.8 km from the east bank of the Gironde River and 2.3 km west of the town of Saint-Dizant-du-Gua in France.  Noisette went to great lengths to try to recover his body.  She noted a major storm in the area at the time too.  Breagha's last signal was from a point near a fish farm.

In February 2015 his 2014 sister, Millicent (Blue AN8(14)f - the one hundred osprey to fledge from LG -  was pronounced dead in Guinea.

Oighrig  Blue CF5(13) m is thought to have died in January/ February 2014.  He too had settled on small tributaries at the mouth of the Casamance, but he moved inland and on 9-10 January 2014 his tag was stationary in an area 10 km E of Toubakouta between the small towns of Simon Diene and Keur Mama Lamine, Senegal.  There was no explanation.  He had moved inland, possibly because he was being pushed out by mature adults into an agricultural area, where there could have been a man/osprey conflict.  It was not possible to get to the exact "last spot" as it was covered by a seasonal wetland.

Yikes, heaven forbid I would every criticise anyone.  But I know how difficult it can become in the height of season to find detail.  I really wasn't intending to be rude or critical.  I suddenly realised how far off course I had got on the DU.  Sorry.

Yes, but I have been perceived to have done so, Sheila, and I thought you gave me a great opportunity to correct the impression while no-one was in danger of thinking it related to a recent comment...

... except you, hehehahaheheeee.  I'm always treading on someone's toes ;-D

I've had 'breakfast' now, so am going to tackle the second episode EJ's second visit, hoping not to fall into carb coma ;)

  • Just a suggestion, but would it not be possible to mention that it's just for reporting action on the nest at the start of every new DU.  Newbies do get easily upset and at least if there was a gentle reminder every day, if can politely be pointed out.

Feel free to ignore me, but I have seen people get quite upset and even angry.
