Osprey Chat Thread for March 2018

It's finally March and our birds will start to return this month.

BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • Thank you Catlady - I now see the other thread so good to know all is well.

Thank you Mike - but No, not exactly what I was looking for.   I was looking for a summary round up of all nests like last year as just so helpful remembering who is who and where and what to look out for.  I was hoping Tiger would do the same again but not so.  But I am pleased to see all is well with him.

  • Tiger is alive and well. Clare very kindly decided to start the new chat thread.

I did write a monthly summary but it is only on my  Osprey Facebook Group

  • Thank you for calling me kind, Tiger.  Others may not agree:-D

  • Thank you Tiger.

I am pleased you are well and must say that I very much enjoy your monthly summaries.

Great news to learn you have written a summary also most kind of you to provide a link.  So looking forward to reading it and of course to the 2018 season.

  • Unfortunately, can’t access your monthly summary Tiger but no matter.

A friend emailed details of a site, United Kingdom Ospreys, which lists all the osprey nests, their birds and when they are due back – just what I was looking for.

If of interest to anyone, here is the url -   http://ukospreys.uk/countdowndt.htm

So 1st March has arrived with a lot of snow around. Will it rival March 2013 when there were a lot of snow and the ospreys were late.

We got another 15 days before an osprey is expected in the UK. Some of them must be already flying north in Africa.

So what are you expecting or hoping for?

Well top of the mystery list is Loch Garten. Will EJ return or is there going to be complete change?

Will the Loch of the Lowes have another good year?

What about the two new nests? Clarach's? and Louis'

    Another good year at Kielder?

Will Mrs G make her traditional early arrival?

Will Blue 33 and Maya be back early?

Then there are the translocation projects. Will Urdaibai get its first nesting pair?

Gosh it is all so exciting.

Will Blue 24 and her male finally get down to breeding successfully?  I'd also love to see another Dyfi offspring make a triumphant return.

It goes without saying I want to see Monty and Glesni back!

  • From LG FB page today

"23 days and counting until the Osprey Centre opens for the 2018 season. This year, Friday 30th will be very Good Friday!

We are hoping the camera will be up and running by the middle of next week (weather permitting). EJ will be back at approximately 4:26 on Sunday 25th March. She just sent me a What's App message..."!!
