This thread is a total experiment! I thought of it because a few nights ago, a lot of of useful information about ospreys was being posted in the LG Diary comments, but because of the blog format, it will be out of sight once a new blog is posted, and easily forgotten.
The idea for this thread:
· To provide a place for people to ask questions about ospreys at Loch Garten, or ospreys in general, which members of the Forum will answer to the best of their ability. NB Questions directed to the team at Loch Garten, should still be posted in the Comments area of the Loch Garten Osprey Diary.
· To preserve the answers for future reference
Asking Questions
For clarity, please only ask one question at a time.
Replying to Questions
Try to be specific, giving links to the relevant information where possible, or quote your sources. If you are giving your own opinions, recollections or theories, please make that clear.
If the question you are answering is not the last post in the thread, please use the Quote facility to include the question in your answer.
General
To make it easier to search for the topic in the future, use the Tags field. For example, if your question is “Is Odin really Scandinavian?” enter “Odin” in Tags.

I can only speak for LG - in excess of 95% of mating attempts occur on the nest, but males have attempted to mate with females when they have been perched near the nest - in recent decades usually on the dead tree that was the original eyrie tree.
Some people think Ospreys are a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that.
I am concerned that EJ will shortly be laying the eggs fertilised by Blue. What will she do if the nest is still covered in snow?
A thing of beauty is a joy forever.

I have been having similar thoughts. I guess she will ask the bald eagles for advice.
Tiger Signature
LOL!
Not withstanding the probability that Odin will smell a rat and kick them out anyway. All in all, I don't rate their chances.

No I do not think that Odin will kick the eggs like Henry was won't to do. In 2006 EJ laid and egg only four days after Henry arrived and he just said "gosh that was quick".
RACH - You have been reading my story to you about The Villain at Aberfoyle (Metal Ring).
Do not forget in that case eggs were already in the nest as was the case with Henry in 2005.
But of course S18 (blue XD) took a different approach when he found his wife with eggs and a young Norwegian toy boy in 2001
Tiger I am curious and something I do not know and you are teasing so please let us know :)

Well if I knew what you are talking about I could answer but I do not.
B & B - What are you curious about (S18).
He found eggs in the nest - evicted the toyboy and looked after the ggs. One hatched and he raised it to fledge as his own.
If EJ does lay his eggs I am with TIGER that Odin will do the same as S18 and raise them as his own but then on the other hand she may lay Odins Eggs.
