  • Glad you've got your connection back, Rosy. Apparently quite a lot of people could smell smoke.

It's very sad that some lives have been lost in these bad winds. Such a coincidence that it's exactly 30 years since the last Big Storm when so many trees were lost and so much damage done.

    Enjoyed your photos, Clare.

  • Evening all:

Diane:  No smoke at all here, but temps are typical October - too high!  Where's Autumn....

dibnlib:  Hope your friends managed to see something of the area around San Francisco - I'm thinking going south to Carmel and down Highway 1 might be their best bet given the mess north of the city.

Lindybird: Sounds like you chose the right time to leave.  They were talking about that storm on our news tonight and how the dust, etc., from the Sahara and the fires in Spain and Portugal cast a strange light.

Clare: Another lovely day out for you and Limpy!  Are you keeping all the photos you take?

Rosy: Who knows why technology works one day and not the next. It can be sooo frustrating!

  • Delayed saga of Yorke Peninsula “upper leg” bus trip. First stop, for coffee, at Port Wakefield roadhouse, then on around the top of Gulf St Vincent. To the north the Hummocks (low hills, part of Mt Lofty Ranges). Samphire in flat swampy foreground.

     .

Brief visit to Clinton Centre, only 2 buildings (present & former church/school) amid farmland. YP grows a lot of barley. Then on to Winulta (church demolished, path in memory of parishioner laid 1946 survives plus a cairn), Price (small town), Dowlingville (just a church, hall & memorial to stump jump plough).

    .

    .

This land was originally covered with mallee, trees with multiple trunks & tough roots. Enterprising farmers designed a plough that would “jump” over the obstructions. I notice that Wikipedia doesn’t mention Dowlingville makers, the Whittaker Bros.

    .

Lunch in Ardrossan. I munched my pie as I walked the streets. How to use old bowls? A lampstand by the bowling club.

It was more like a couple of hours out - Limpy hasn't been well lately and it was the first time in weeks he'd been able to go out and walk anywhere without collapsing.

Yes, I keep all my photos - the ones which come out all right, anyway.  You don't want to know just how many we've got between us!!

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • Good  Morning.  First thing I did today was look out of the window to see if our plum tree was still there! Don't think we have any damage in the garden. Hope everyone else is alright.

Nice to come on here and find some more pics from AQ.

But sorry to hear that Limpy's not been too good, Clare :-(

  • Alert!  Stranger popping in to say storm wasn't much here, but bad in Galloway.  Actually I just had my best night's sleep for a year!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Pleased you enjoyed my quirky pic yesterday, with the parrot!

    Here's today's pic:

  • Good to hear that OG is alright. The storm was bad over Scotland, after battering Ireland.

Going back now to read AQs post properly ..  ..

  • Hello all -

I was wondering about OG and EE and the weather. Happy to hear that they are OK.

Many thanks to all for pics and posts - I am up to date with your news.

The journey back yesterday was  bit nerve racking. Son's car lost power when we were halfway to Birmingham Airport, traffic was horrendous but thankfully we had allowed enough time. So the car had no acceleration. When we got there with about 40 minutes to boarding time, there was a hold up in Security. The bag ahead of mine had items in which caused the scanners some concern. After four different staff had looked at the X Ray they eventually, after ages, brought the bag over to the passenger. Interestingly, unlike in previous times when they would have opened the bag and searched it with the passenger present - they didn't. Presumably for reasons of security they just showed him a print out of the X Ray and pointed out the item 'of concern'. Got my hand luggage, eventually and had to face a long walk to Departures (limping and slow, as my foot is far from good). Flight uneventful but then after picking up my suitcase I conveniently forgot to take it with me in the taxi.... Fortunately it was where I had left it. It could only happen to me.

  • CLARE   Sorry to hear that Limpy is not well. Hope he improves soon.
