HAPPY NEW WEEK!

I hope everyone has a wonderful week.

When I was young, I spent a lot of time on the Gulf coast of Florida. My then-husband had family there. I so loved watching the Gulf wildlife. Tonight, the area where I explored the wild is under a mandatory evacuation order. It's expected to be hit hard by the massive Hurricane Irma. (For perspective: Irma is bigger than France.) My thoughts are with the people and the wildlife throughout the southeast U.S.

  • Here's today's pic:

"I've got lots to do, today!"

  • I’ve lurked a little. Been busy processing photos from past trip and researching possibles for next trips. Balmy weather (23 max yesterday) enticed me to the weed patch, previously known as veggie patch. I’ve swapped nanny duty from next week to this as I plan to escape on the Thurs and want to be fit for my long-awaited lone trip to Burra, etc.

  • Quiet on here today.

Friend came for a biscuit and a gossip, and we put the world to rights. Then this afternoon, I walked to the town on errands, and got wet on the way home, though it had been dry when I left. I see it's going to be very wet & windy throughout the UK tomorrow.

This morning I went out to the bird feeders, and something caught my eye. In a half empty tub of flowers, there sat an unmoving bird. It was a teenage Goldie, who looked at me but did not move at all. I suppose it had hit the window and was dazed. I rushed indoors, before the dog noticed.

Later Iooked out of the window and it was still in exactly the same position, after fifteen minutes, but I don't like to pick up injured birds unless I have to, as it can traumatize them. Thankfully when I looked again after another fifteen minutes, it was gone.

    Phew!

  • Very quiet, LINDA.  I am late because I had a long visit to nurse this morning, then a busy afternoon.  OH is still catching up, blanching more beans which I prepared earlier.  J drove himself to work and back today, and seems fine - next appt for him Friday.  We are suddenly seeing teenage Goldies here too - after having none here for a while - guess they must have been out in the hedgerows!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Hi all.  Just reading through the posts.  Notice Lindy you are going cruising.  Which line are you going with and can you recommend it.  We are thinking of going on a cruise next year for our 50th WA. I love the idea of dressing up for dinner but if its informal will follow whatever dress is dictated.

Diane, Annette, thinking of all those in Florida and nearby states who are affected by Hurricane Irma. Also those islands, which depend on tourism, in the Carribean where devastation has been left in its wake.

OG - nice to hear you are feeling better.  Hope J's toe heals quickly and that your OH managed to get the paint for the hall.

There is nothing like dressing up to make you feel better.

Remember seeing Johnny Dankworth and Cleo Lane at MK shopping centre some years back. They were giving a jazz recital with dinner to follow in adjoining marquee. Quite an enjoyable evening.

Well, some parts of the British Isles are going to be battered by Storm Aileen tonight into tomorrow. I think we will be at the edge of the storm looking at the map but who knows.  Batten down the hatches and hope all keep safe.

  • OG - Good that J is feeling better and has gone to work.

Lynette -- We have only been on one cruise before, last year, and that was with Royal Caribbean Line. We were very happy with them. Friends of ours who are more experienced recommended that we stick to either them, or Cunard, or  P& O. Of course, if you prefer the smaller ships, which can be more intimate, there are several Lines who do quite a choice of destinations. But they can be pricey because there is a higher ratio of crew to guests.

You don't have to dress up - there is always a buffet restaurant open and their only fuss is that men don't have bare chests in the daytime, or swimwear without a cover up, so you can be informal if you wish.  The 'formal' rule also only applies on Formal Nights (edit -- about 3 nights on a 7 day cruise, or 4 on a ten to fourteen day cruise) in the main restaurants - and lots of people seem to ignore that anyway. On other nights you can wear whatever you wish. Most men go for a short sleeved shirt and slacks or chinos. Most ladies wear a summer dress, or smart t shirt or pretty blouse with slacks. But no shorts in the evenings!

  • Morning all (late Tuesday here!).  Saw an interesting news segment tonight on Irma's impact on the Carribean islands where they interviewed people on Anguilla and asked them how the response from the UK compared to the French response on nearby St. Martin.   (Anguillans had a lot to say).

OG: A nice gesture to donate in Margo's memory.

Lindybird:  Trust me, size 6.5 feet/shoes are dainty! I get frustrated because they always put small sized shoes out on display, then they bring them out in my size and they look like barges!  Hate shopping for shoes.  Your friend must be so relieved to be driving again.  I've heard that Royal Caribbean is a good cruise line.  And Crystal (think $$$$$s!)   I've looked over the smaller ship cruises and yes, indeed, pricey is the word (but they go to places the big ones can't).

AQ: A lone trip to Burra?  Is this with a tour grip or are you going solo by train/bus?

About to topple into bed; have a good Wednesday all.

  • Good Morning.  Dull and wet here, but we seem to have escaped the storm last night except for some winds but nothing major.

Annette - My feet, on short legs, look large! I suppose none of us like our bodies. Friend is thrilled to get her independence back. Yes, the smaller ships can go where the bigger ones can't dock, and sneak down places where others can't:  I've got my eye on the smaller ones which go to the Norwegian Fjords and sail right down the famous ones rather than have to lurk at the entrance. But it is more expensive - as it's not far from UK, a short 7 night trip seems to be the answer.

Off to the hairdressers today - hope I don't get blown away!

  • My pic won't post.......
