Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey Topics), 19 June 2016

HAPPY NEW WEEK!

Last week's Chat thread is here.

On Monday: HAPPY SOLSTICE and HAPPY FULL MOON!

This will be the first Full Moon to fall on the June Solstice since 1967 -- the Summer of Love! -- according to EarthSky. Other sources say it hasn't happened since 1948.

The Slooh Observatory will host an online live streaming special dedicated to the Solstice and Full Moon combination event.

Everyone have a wonderful week!

  • Evening all:  Re the "points" system of immigration (I looked at Canada's today), one of the things I've noticed about many immigrants who must've scored low on the scale is that they work themselves silly to make sure their children get a good education and so are able to take advantage of opportunities their parents - and they - would likely never have had in their own countries. It's complicated.  And what do you do about refugees - especially the kiddies - who have lost everything through no fault of their own?

AQ: Great to hear from you and assume you're now equipped with shiny new knee!

Diane: I was listening to NPR too, but there was an interesting discussion of the latest Trump campaign changes on PBS News Hour's Politics Monday segment.

bjane: I remember driving to Arizona (Tucson) in September 1979 in an old car with no a/c.  I had a small ice box with me and a face cloth and kept dipping the face cloth in the ice and then wearing it on my head!  But it wasn't 122F.

OG: Pleased that J has the same hours as before.  You trod in my footsteps at Downtown, where my sister and I went puttering on my last trip; I'm sure we were at the Garden Center there too (bought some gloves there).

Rosy: Too bad that your bowls club is losing members. Still, knitting has made a comeback here among younger types.

    Have a good Tuesday all.

  • Good Morning, All.   DIANE:   that card for AQ is just beautiful!

AQ:  You'll not be reading this now, then, but we are indeed all thinking of you and wishing you a speedy recovery.  It is odd that we all get very 'edited' news of the goings on in each other's countries. We do hear about 'sensational' things, such as dramatic murders and big bushfires there.

ANNETTE:  Meant to say last night that I agree with you that in the past, Mother Nature has taken a hand in population explosions - we could be facing another sort of plague one day, not nice to think about at all but I'm with those who say that it won't be wars that signal the end of mankind, but our numbers being unsustainable. :-(    On different issue, one of the Leave camp has just been on TV saying that we will still take some refugees on a humanitarian basis. We've already offered to take several thousand displaced lone children, which brought a tear to my eye because it reminded me of the story of the Kinder Transport in WWII.

  • Rosy: My OH played Crown Green Bowls for many years, very popular around here, but he is now a social member only. He took up golf and is enjoying that.

Today I'm going to put back ornaments in the wall cabinets etc, in the dining room, and then take china plates and pictures off the walls in the kitchen. I have a couple of large frames in there which hold multi photos, and as you can imagine I rotate those regularly with the best pics of the much loved grandchildren! Hoping to visit our Youngest and his brood next Saturday.

Dry here today and temps supposed to become a bit more summery this week!

  • The sun has come out!  Hooray!

Coffee break time... or in my case, hot chocolate.  Here are some of my garden pictures, taken on the 1st June:

My beloved poppies:  (the buds on the right all came out eventually, but did not last long because of the constant rain :-( )

    Clematis:

The one above is growing in our plum tree, and eventually rose almost to the top, this year - pictures of that another time.

  • Our enormous lilac tree, which has now been cut down by a third, so not so many blooms next year:

  • A dog who was not at all impressed by having to wear a 'lampshade'  !!!!  Her reaction:

  • Oh LINDY - sorry, but I had to laugh !! best thing I've seen for ages!

Just heard from youngest daughter. Her husband and some in his team have been provisionally selected for redundancy in September if the firm can't secure more work. As of now, I don't know if any of the team have been definitely told that they are safe. A few have jumped ship and taken voluntary redundancy. Not sure what SiL will do.

  • I put it on for you to laugh, Heather!!  She was not at all impressed, and spent a good half hour chewing it.  Then she somehow got it off.  It went on again the next day but not for long.  Then we gave up - she did not interfere with her scar anyway, so all was well.

So sorry things don't look great for daughter's OH.  Maybe more work will turn up for the company and he will be reprieved.

  • A beautiful day here. OH playing bowls again this afternoon, so I have started planting some pots.

Diane, A beautiful card for AQ. Best wishes that you will finish your project on time.

Rosy, We have lost six really good bowls players this year. Four, of whom, have died unexpectedly and quite young.

Heather, Sorry about the news for your son-in-law. I really do hope that either his company receive more contracts, or he is able to find a position with a different company.

Linda, Love your photographs. I like the shade ( colour) of Bonnie's lampshade, but she obviously didn't LOL

  • Morning all:

Lindybird: Love that last shot of Bonnie. Will be watching the Brexit vote on Thursday - the final result should be in around our dinner time. I'll see what kind of live online coverage the BBC will have.

Heather: Ugh. So more months of uncertainty for daughter and Sil. This is the oil industry, right??  Is the company offering severance buyouts or is that something people would have to wait until the last minute to collect?
