  • Wind appears to be strengthening now...

I haven't seen the procedure, have you? Is it live? Or do we just see hands reaching over the side of the nest? Wonder how they avoid scaring the chicks so much they'd try to escape and go over the side of the nest.

Missed the procedure last year - can't remember if someone taped it though.   From what I gather, when threatened, the chicks flatten themselves into the nest and pretend they are not there.   Richard wrote an amusing account of the procedure.   Go to the main RSPB blog page and he explains it all (didn't want you to think I was an 'expert' or anything!)  If you haven't got it, the link is

Whereabouts in the South of France are you? Are you a permanent resident? Sounds nice (my family says that area, and Spain and Cyprus, are like SoCal - or vice versa).

I'm in the Languedoc area - nothing like the fashionable Cote d'Azur.   We are on the sea and at the moment an early morning sea breeze is cooling things down.   I've been to SoCal and I would say the main difference is that we DEFINITELY get winter and summer seasons - I believe you don't get quite the variations we get in Europe?

Better go back to the main topic!  All quiet on the nest with sporadic preening and a very patient EJ still surveying her chicks and waiting for breakfast.

  • Oh thanks FlyingC!  That'll be interesting to quite a few folks I should think. I'll check it out tomorrow when my eyes are properly awake.

  • We get temperate (for the most part) summers by the coast and mostly temperate winters. Just a couple of hours up the road and over a hill or two and it's more "extreme."

Meanwhile, at LG, EJ has flown off!  Very quiet both at LG and LOTL this morning. No fish deliveries yet.

  • I suppose by over a hill or two you mean the Rockies???  LOL!

Looks like the wind is beginning to get up again.   I wouldn't call it a stiff breeze yet.   The microphone is still pretty quiet.   Just watching the feathers ruffling up a bit more.

EJ just flew back in.  I think she went for a quick morning jog.

  • FlyingC: No - the coast range actually.   :-)

Where is Odin?  I'm beginning to fade here.......Oh EJ did another run around the block...now moving furniture again.

  • Where's EJ gone now?  Maybe she's tired of waiting for Odin and has gone off to catch her own fish.

  • Do you think she's trying to get to the camera, Annette?

Ooops,  She disappeared while I was typing but last time I saw her, she seemed to be climbing up to the camera and we had a very good shot of her talons!
