Hallo all: I put up the painters' tape showing the dimensions of the various flat-screen tellys (tellies?) we're looking at and now we're thinking maybe we don't need a really big one.
Auntie: Great that you had a lovely day at Pohtiolampi; how fun to see ospreys in action.
OG: I say put Loch Garten for sure on your trip north! We expect a full report! OMG: That python/gator photo was fascinatingly gross. Talk about his eyes being bigger than his belly!! Eeeeuw! Why did I think orchids were a hot-weather plant.... Well - if you go to Caerlaverock, hope you enjoy it. Are "kissing gates" the same as stiles? All I can remember is "Would you rather run a mile, jump a stile, or eat a pancake in a field?" Oh dear. Talk about regressing...... Thanks for update on Big Rig Steve; haven't been on the computer all day. Had earnest discussion with vines, who have promised to behave, and gave some encouragement to the tomatoes, which are being a bit shy. Currently, our ailing Navel Orange tree is getting a lot of TLC in the form of deep watering followed by nutritional snack that will make it feel better (and we hope, look and and taste better).
AQ: Universal laws transcend borders. :-)
It's July 4 - Independence Day - tomorrow; will start off the day shortly after 6 a.m.(!) with live Wimbledon coverage (on our normal channel - just checked!), then will putter about before picking up daughter in late afternoon to go to Mission Santa Ynez, where we'll watch July 4 fireworks display. OH not thrilled with fireworks, so he'll stay home and keep Lightning company (she doesn't like them either).
In the meantime, off to check on osprey cams.
Margobird So pleased you are happy with your new hearing aid. The bird song will seem so wonderful to you, not to mention all the other pleasant sounds. Enjoy!
Brenda H I don't ever wear shorts as I have to wear shin-guards to protect my legs - it solves the problem of wondering if you are too old, too many prominent veins, etc for shorts. My colourscheme is becoming more psychedelic by the day!
Patriciat - Rainbow legs? Shouldn’t there be a pot of gold somewhere? Joking aside, I hope you are not too sore.
Lindybird - I hope she doesn’t jinx them but future m-i-l of Bride#1 has been busy knitting small things for months. It’s called Granny Lust in a book I read. LOL
Annette - I had a discussion with Himself on TV sizes (mine is a mere 20"). He says his (& supposedly other Aussies’) interest is now in 3D TVs. Not for me as I have one short-sighted eye. Swimming in Aussieland - well, there are the white pointer sharks too. But they say one is safer in the sea than on the road. Hm. Hiking. We have the Heyson Trail from Cape Jervis to Parachilna Gorge, 1200km. Hikers do segments as time permits. http://www.heysentrail.asn.au/heysen_trail/ or http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/parks/heysen/ . For off-road cyclists there is the Mawson Trail, 900 km.
More Universal Laws
Law of the Result - When you try to prove to someone that a machine won't work, it will.
Law of Biomechanics - The severity of the itch is inversely proportional to the reach.
Law of Close Encounters -The probability of meeting someone you know increases dramatically when you are with someone you don't want to be seen with.
Annette: You okay? I assume that you were far enough away from the earthquake that your home didn't sustain any damage?
Non-U.S. folks: An earthquake rattled a large portion of Southern California a little while ago; the epicenter was near Palm Springs, California. It was originally called a 5.9 but has been downgraded to a 5.4. No injuries reported so far -- at least not on my media.
Hi, all. No ring and bling today. Hope the LG chicks stay in the nest. Early today, I saw two of the chicks picking on the other one -- putting sticks on its back, etc. -- just like bored teenagers. LOL They seemed intent on making the one chick move. Maybe it was sitting on a fish. :-)
Off to bed early. Have to go on a big shopping mission tomorrow early before it gets too hot. It was 97 F / 36 C today. It's supposed to cool off tomorrow as storms move in. Yay! Will catch up soon. Everyone have a nice Thursday!!!
Evening all: Watched World Cup today - and pleased to see Spain win!
Sandy: Thanks for update on peregrines, glad the one survived its bumpy launch. Very flamboyant pheasant.
Lindybird: I haven't seen any of the Shrek movies.
AQ: Saw that we can now buy 3-D tellies - but don't think I'm ready for that - have to wear specs as it is; all I need is yet another pair to hang on my "real" ones.
Diane: Oh dear, yet another earthquake that I didn't feel - but a 5.4 near Palm Springs (the San Andreas Fault is right there)? I probably would've felt it if I were still living in Long Beach.
Going to pick up friend who's arriving at Santa Barbara Airport at 10 p.m., so may not be back tonight; also have an early morning tomorrow. Take care all.
After Sandy updated on the Brighton peregrines, I realised I hadn't posted here about the Chichester nest recently. The chicks all fledged successfully in the second week of June and everyone is fine - here are 3 of the young perched on the battlements:
The family have started going out of town during the day for hunting lessons. I found this photo album, with some great pics of the 2 young females flying together with prey:

Morning, All: Dull but dry here today. Will take a chance & put my laundry outside.
Thanks for the above pic and link, Sue C. Good to know that the peregrines all fledged successfully.
All sorts of loose ends to tie up today, both physical (housework & hedge tidying) and mental (form filling & phone calls!). Better roll up my sleeves and get started.
Have a Good Thursday, All.
Morning All; Another hot and sunny day forecast here. No rain forecast untill Monday, which is the day of our neighbour's funeral.
Sandy, Lovely picture of the pheasant. No doubt a crossbreed to produce the unusual colouring. Good news about the injured peregrine.
AQ, Just love your ' Universal Laws'. They are so true.
patriciat, Sorry about my insensitive remark about wearing shorts. I really do hope you are not suffering too much.
Annette, Did your neighbours feel the earthquake, whilst you just slept through? Good to hear there were no injuries reported.
Margo, I hope you are not driving your OH mad now by turning the volume down too much so that he can't hear the TV any more. Such good news though to hear that you have no problems with your hearing aid.
I can hear EJ alarm calling again.
Good morning Brenda H. Dull and very humid here at the moment. We even had a little drop of rain overnight but not enough to do any good.
Have to laugh now as the boot is on the foot now OH can't hear the TV if I turn it down. It has made me realise how much hearing had gone. I had sworn blind I wasn't going deaf but have been proved so wrong. I am sure we will get to a solution over how how loud the TV is. I did have a bit of difficuly this morning trying to get it in, the air was blue for a while. OH was trying to help but walked away in the end and at that point I was successful. The booklet says it does take a while to get used to fitting it all on your ear so hopefully every day will get easier.
